Nonostante la veneranda età di 73 anni, Neil Young pare instancabile e tutt’altro che disposto a fermarsi, fosse anche solo per un pit stop. “Colorado” è la sua fatica discografica numero trentanove, la terza in tre anni, considerando le due uscite in compagnia dei Promise Of The Real. Vanno poi considerate l’attività live piuttosto fitta e le numerose sortite extra-musicali, tra cui il lancio, va detto non proprio fortunato, di un suo formato digitale e relativo lettore (il Pono).

Era però dal 2012 di “Psychedelic Pill“, però, che Neil non si faceva sentire in compagnia di quei vecchiacci sgangherati dei Crazy Horse. Inutile dire che quando Molina, Sanpedro, Talbot e a questo giro finanche Lofgren sono della partita, l’evento merita attenzioni maggiori. Almeno per chi è da sempre affezionato al sound granuloso e dolente di una band non proprio formata da fuoriclasse dei rispettivi strumenti, ma che ha inconsapevolmente segnato tonnellate di musica alternativa a venire, dal grunge a J Mascis e a decine di altri figliocci di quelle lunghe sgroppate roventi e scalcinate.

Una di queste scorribande la troviamo anche qui, alla posizione numero due della tracklist. “She Showed Me Love”: due borbottii di chitarra, Molina che rulla come un vecchio trattore che perde qualche colpo ma rimane più affidabile di qualsiasi nuovo modello, ed è subito il 1969 di “Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere”. L’armonica di “Think Of Me” e il finale sossurrato e col capo chino di “I Do” rimandano invece ai toni più rarefatti e docili, ma non per questo meno ficcanti, del periodo di “Harvest“.

Il riff pesante e ineluttabile di “Help Me Lose My Mind”, così come quello più guizzante della rabbiosa “Shut It Down”, sono praticamente grunge. Senza bisogno di scomodare il suffisso proto, dato il pieno riconoscimento del genere da parte dei suoi padrini che qui fanno sanguinare le chitarre come fossero i Pearl Jam di “Vs”.

“There is a rainbow of colors in the whole Usa/ no one is gonna white wash those colors away”, cantano in coro Young e gli Horse nella ballad col cuore in gola “Rainbow Of Colors”. Dopo la fratellanza e il rifiuto di ogni forma di razzismo e ideologia xenofoba, l’altro pallino di Neil, l’ecologismo, si fa sentire nel bridge di “She Showed Me Love”: “I saw old white guys trying to kill mother nature”.

Un disco rotto. Forse sì. Salterà pure, come quei vecchi vinili comprati a un mercatino delle pulci, ma pur impolverato è sempre un piacere ascoltarlo, il vecchio Neil, lamentarsi e gemere (“Milky Way”) come se questo vecchio bistrattato pianeta dovesse fargli da casa ancora per molto. E comunque: repetita iuvant in questi tempi dissennati e fuori controllo.

Manca di qualche acuto, del puro genio che sbucava qui e lì in “Psychedelic Pill” (leggi, ad esempio, il fischiettare mefistofelico della gigantesca “Walk Like A Giant”), ma “Colorado” è un disco, anche se conosciuto in ogni suo aspetto, pienamente piacevole. Un po’ come visitare quei vecchi zii di montagna; potrebbe essere una delle ultime volte, e così il calore del loro camino, l’odore delle castagne e il fruscio delle foglie gialle sollevate dal vento hanno un significato e un sapore più profondi. Ossigeno e melancolia da respirare a pieni polmoni.
