Di certo Neil Young non finirà mai di stupirci e con lui le case discografiche. Rimane infatti un mistero il perché quattro suoi dischi, mai editi in cd, vengano ristampati solo ora. Certo non tutti sono dei capolavori, certamente però "On The Beach" appartiene alla produzione migliore del cantautore canadese e "Hawks & Doves" e "American Stars 'N Bars", sono di gran lunga migliori, per esempio, di "Trans" o "Landing On Water", da tempo disponibili su cd. Forse di "Re-ac-tor" in pochi sentivano davvero la mancanza ma l'aspetto più stupefacente dell'operazione è che l'uscita di questi dischi avvenga solo pochi giorni prima dell'atteso "Greendale", il nuovo lavoro di Neil Young con i Crazy Horse (senza la chitarra di Sampedro), inflazionando di fatto un mercato già traballante.

Misteriose operazioni di mercato a parte, non rimane che parlare di "Greendale", un disco non facile, nessun concept album lo è, che torna ai suoni del passato, che ritrova come d'incanto quella ispirazione ultimamente appannata. Se l'ultimo album "Are you Passionate?" aveva ricevuto più critiche che consensi, oltreoceano "Greendale" è già osannato senza riserve e incassa solo aggettivi positivi. Attraverso le undici canzoni, alcune oltre i dieci minuti, si dipana la storia di un villaggio californiano e dei suoi personaggi, ben approfondita dal ricco libretto allegato al cd. Pur rimanendo nel contesto, a volte poco digeribile di un album "di concetto", le canzoni riescono a sopravvivere alla storia stessa. Certamente se prese singolarmente non faranno mai un singolo radiofonico, ma brani come l'iniziale "Falling From Above", grazie alle atmosfere suadenti e penetranti, ben sostenute da una morbida chitarra elettrica, si ascolterebbero all'infinito.

Insomma, l'opera può anche essere "letta" senza rispettare l'ordine dei capitoli, scoprendo una "scordatissima" "Bandit" o una lunghissima ballata ecologista come "Be The Rain", tra le pagine di un libro lasciato aperto. "Greendale" era stato presentato interamente durante il tour estivo (la data del concerto di Dublino a Vicar St., è contenuta nel Dvd allegato come bonus all'edizione speciale del nuovo disco, per il quale vale davvero pena di spendere qualche prezioso euro in più) durante il quale Neil Young aveva anticipato tutte le canzoni, armato solo della sua chitarra e della voglia di farle conoscere.

Lo spessore del lavoro era intuibile dall'attenzione e dalla passione con cui lo stesso Young aveva introdotto ogni brano, cogliendo di sorpresa un pubblico che non era stato adeguatamente preparato all'evento. In conclusione "Greendale" è un signor disco con tutti i pregi (il sound asciutto con i cavalli pazzi Molina e Talbot") e i difetti (gli oltre 12 minuti di "Sun Green") che può avere un'opera di questo genere. Anche se alla lunga non rimarrà tra le pietre miliari di Young come "After The Gold Rush", "Tonight’s The Night" o "Harvest", "Greendale" resta un disco degno di nota: in quanti, dopo oltre trent'anni di carriera, riuscirebbero a trovare ancora tanta ispirazione?
