E’ ormai chiaro, dopo decenni di gloriosa attività, che Neil Young sottende una progettualità a ogni suo album. Ultimo per cronologia è il lo-fi estremo di “A Letter Home”, ma gli esempi, specie se si pensa alle stramberie dei suoi anni 80, si sprecano. Quasi all’opposto di “A Letter Home” sta “Storytone”, dunque secondo disco in studio in meno di un anno, stavolta improntato a un massimalismo ad alta definizione di suono che impiega un’orchestra a organico allargato. Per Young è uno dei progetti più alieni di sempre, anche se in realtà quella del rock orchestrale è una prassi ormai banale, trasversale alla stragrande maggioranza dei sottogeneri di ogni era.

Il canadese ha avuto già qualche precedente nella sua età dell’oro, vale a dire l’intervento della Gone With The Wind Orchestra in buona parte di “Comes A Time”, e ancor meglio le due pièce arrangiate con la London Symphony contenute in “Harvest”. Come espansione di queste già un po’ tronfie esperienze, però, “Storytone” fallisce miseramente.

Se Owen Pallett, peraltro conterraneo, è riuscito a riplasmare il concetto di pop barocco orchestrale nell’era digitale (anche nella dimenticata esperienza dei Last Shadow Puppets), Young invece intende l’apporto dell’orchestra come normale gingillo di grandeur, alla pari di blasonati colleghi nelle rispettive tarde parti di carriera: Sting, Peter Gabriel, e altri, non ultima la connazionale Joni Mitchell.

“Tumbleweed”, “I’m Glad I Found You”, “Plastic Flowers” – con echi di “After The Gold Rush”, che però ne rovinano la memoria – obbediscono senza riserve al braccio armato dei musical di Broadway, poco cambia che lo strumento guida sia il piano o l’ukulele; solo l’inno “Who’s Gonna Stand Up?”, che aggiunge pure un coro, riesce a essere contagioso.

Il patetico country domestico di “When I Watch You Sleeping” (versione sdolcinata della “Dust In The Wind” dei Kansas) e “All Those Dreams” (versione inerte della ballad sinfoniche dei secondi Chicago), per quanto altrettanto irrilevanti, quantomeno ricordano che Young è pur sempre un cantautore.

Per rispettare ritualmente ogni canone della moda quivi intrapresa, Young si cimenta anche con lo swing sinatriano (“Say Hello To Chicago”) con esiti che si commentano da soli. I due rhythm’n’blues di “I Want To Drive My Car” e “Like You Used To Do” sono deludenti diversivi che riportano a “This Note’s For You” (1987).

Registrato in presa diretta come per “Living With War” (un altro esperimento massimalista, ma lì la sua chitarra ancora ruggiva), primo album con canzoni in cui Young canta solamente senza toccare strumento, supporto alla sua seconda autobiografia “Special Deluxe: A Memoir Of Life & Cars” (Blue Rider Press). Uno degli album col minor tasso di “cavallo pazzo” – lo ritraduce forse l’ostinato pulsante della strofa di “Who’s Gonna Stand Up?” – stemperato in vagiti, effusioni, tematiche fatue, muzak natalizia. Edizione di lusso con un secondo cd acustico che, va da sé, affievolisce carie e diabete ma aumenta i dubbi sull’utilità del materiale. Titolo originale: “Storeytone”.
