Neil Young makes a surprise return to the stage: watch the video of his Vancouver performance

24-05-2026

In a surprise appearance, Neil Young returned to the stage last night in Vancouver, during a benefit concert held to celebrate the 90th birthday of Canadian environmentalist David Suzuki. A longtime supporter of Suzuki's ecological battles, Young was among the many high-profile guests at the event, alongside Jane Fonda, Al Gore, Bruce Cockburn, Chantal Kreviazuk and Sarah McLachlan.
During his performance – kept under wraps until the very last moment – the Canadian Loner delivered solo acoustic renditions of two classics from his repertoire: "After The Gold Rush" and "Heart Of Gold". It was his first public appearance since the benefit concert for the Painted Turtle Camp on October 25, 2025, as well as his first return to the stage since the cancellation of his European tour planned for 2026.

Last February, Neil Young had in fact announced the sudden cancellation of all his summer dates across Europe. "I've decided to take a break, and this time I won't be touring Europe," he explained. "Thanks to everyone who bought tickets. I'm sorry to disappoint you, but this isn't the time. I love playing live and being with you and with Chrome Hearts."
Despite having no shows on the calendar, Young has nonetheless kept working intensively in the studio. He recently completed "Second Song", a new album recorded with Chrome Hearts and produced by Rick Rubin. The record will feature both recent unreleased material and previously unreleased songs originally written back in the Sixties. In addition, Young and Chrome Hearts will release the live album "As Time Explodes" on May 29.
