Esaurito il decennio dei 2000, al contempo uno dei suoi più eclettici e tormentati, ma pure artisticamente poco esaltanti, e per la prima volta a diretto contatto con la situazione mondiale (l’instant record isterico di “Living With War“, la vena ambientalista di “Fork In The Road“, il mega-concept “corale” di “Greendale“), Neil Young si affaccia al 2010 ripartendo da se stesso. Deviando per l’ennesima volta la rotta, il “loner” cerca di collegare la rabbia dei suoi anni 70 alle ingenuità dei suoi 80 e alle sperimentazioni più veraci dei 90 in “Le Noise”, uno dei suoi dischi più “loner” di sempre, adottando soltanto la figura del conterraneo Daniel Lanois per sostituire la sua canonica nevrosi a base di assoli rumoristici e jamming cacofonico con un impeto tecnologico disorientante, fatto di effetti elettronici, distorsioni, loop, riverberi, echi, overdub e stereofonie free-form.

Il risultato sembra la naturale prosecuzione degli incubi noise di “Arc” e “Dead Man”, ma a conti fatti è ben lungi dal diventare la sua “Metal Machine Music” definitiva; sembra anzi più vicino alle paranoie autoreferenziali del Roger Waters di “The Wall“.

Sebbene la polpa dell’opera sia essenzialmente younghiana (ballate depresse che sottendono una ferita nel contatto vitale), Lanois ruba spesso e volentieri la scena. L’anthem Rolling Stones-iano di “Walk With Me” è spolpato via via da inserzioni astratte-paradisiache, e da una coda che ne disintegra i connotati a tempo di boogie-woogie. La sua voce è utilizzata come confuso collante ritmico nell’altro, più sempliciotto, anthem di “Angry World”, una rilettura della sua “Hey Hey My My“, come quella altrettanto distorta, prima che la produzione prenda il sopravvento in una marea caotica.

Il suo programma iconoclasta prosegue nella fantasmagoria a base di toni fuzz fratturati in un cristallo di riverberi di “Someone’s Gonna Rescue You” e in modo anche più ipnotico in “Rumblin'”, dove la voce quasi lotta contro spasmi di distorsore a tutto volume, scampoli di assoli vaganti e cut-up canori. “Sign Of Love” presenta uno dei suoi migliori riff stentorei, attorniato da echi elettronici, mentre il canto alieno lascia scie di suono tutt’intorno.

Il processo disturba, eccedendo un po’ in enfasi nelle canzoni acustiche, specie in “Peaceful Valley Boulevard”, che altrimenti rimane come una sconsolata “Thrasher” dei 2000.

Appurata la sua consuetudine-mania di raschiare il fondo del barile (“Hitchhiker” ridà nuova vita alla verbosa e salottiera “Like An Inca”), Neil Young e il suo mai rimosso pallino sperimentale giocano la carta della rielaborazione, del riprocessamento maniacale, per scongiurare una volta per tutte l’autoimitazione. Agnelli sacrificali della celebrazione sono le gracili canzoni, che cadono in tutti i sensi a pezzi sotto i colpi di un Lanois persino dittatore (pure parafrasato in pompa magna dal titolo del disco), e che per giunta offrono la testa alla mannaia della distorsione. Un autore ridotto all’osso e, utilmente o inutilmente, elevato al cubo.
