A pochi mesi da quel “Visitor” (2017) d’ispirazione sfacciatamente patriottica, la collaborazione tra Neil Young e i giovani Promise Of The Real prosegue per un progetto cinematografico, il western-musical anticonformista “Paradox” (2018), opera seconda di Daryl Hannah (attrice notissima al grande pubblico per il suo ruolo d’antagonista nel tarantiniano “Kill Bill”). Il loner e la band partecipano in qualità d’attori oltre, ed era intuibile, come autori della colonna sonora. Il film, in soldoni un nuovo veicolo per la cocciutaggine ambientalista di Young, è persino privo di senso.

E dalla colonna sonora non emerge che un’apoteosi dell’autocelebrazione, in modalità furbamente mutante. Ci sono agganci al repertorio recente e recentissimo, guidati da una “Show Me” tratta da “Peace Trail” (2016) e rielaborata con i Promise, e ci sono – ovviamente – rivisitazioni dell’epoca d’oro, un’ennesima “Cowgirl In The Sand”, qui ribattezzata “Cowgirl Jam” (che ribadisce che il complesso dei fratelli Nelson ancora non eguaglia i Crazy Horse), ma anche una sottovalutata “Pocahontas” filtrata dal timbro metafisico del suo pump organ, sempre un bel sentire.

In qualsivoglia forma, il contatto tra il canadese e il cinema ha sempre dato risultati imbarazzanti tranne in un caso: la partitura quasi-aleatoria per un altro western metafisico, di tutt’altra caratura rispetto al tentativo della Hannah, “Dead Man” (1995). Uno Young consapevole fino al narcisismo dei suoi talenti sbatte dentro anche questo, pur banalizzando quelle spontanee, viscerali, estese traversate di feedback, echi e tremolo, in piccoli souvenir, i sei “Paradox Passage”. E’ l’unico motivo per mangiare cotanta minestra, peraltro allungata con canzoni del padre dei Nelson, l’amicone Willie. Per neilyounghiani non di ferro, di titanio.
