Un vecchio fienile sotto il cielo delle Rocky Mountains in Colorado e quattro musicisti, anche loro non proprio di primo pelo, sulla soglia. La foto della copertina di “Barn”, scattata dalla moglie di Neil Young, Daryl Hannah, ci catapulta in una sospensione temporale composta di isolamento, passione, birra fresca, cani, notti di luna piena, strumenti musicali e amicizia tra artisti che hanno condiviso le strade nella gran parte della loro vita e ora si ritrovano ancora per fare quello che riesce loro meglio: suonare, comporre e stare insieme.

Neil Young è arrivato all’album numero 41 e per l’occasione convoca – ed è solo la quattordicesima volta, l’ultima fu per “Colorado” – i sodali di una vita, i mitici Crazy Horse. Tuttavia, solo la sezione ritmica si presenta all’appello: ci sono il bassista Billy Talbot e il batterista Ralph Molina, manca il chitarrista Frank “Poncho” Sampedro, che viene rimpiazzato da un altro fedelissimo del canadese: il polistrumentista e componente della E-Street Band di Springsteen Nils Lofgren, già collaboratore di Neil Young dai tempi di “After The Gold Rush“.

Tutto il materiale lavorato nel fienile è di recente produzione, niente archivi o vecchie registrazioni resuscitate dal passato: tutto è stato composto entro un anno, quindi roba di giornata, una sorta di chilometro zero temporale, per rimanere in tema ecologista, molto caro al buon Neil e alla moglie Daryl.

Non ci si può aspettare un album musicalmente rivoluzionario, ormai il modo di comporre del vecchio rocker di Toronto è consolidato, anche se nel recente passato qualche scossone lo ha dato (“Le Noise” o “Psychedelic Pill“), e non è neppure un prodotto impeccabile a livello esecutivo, perché la priorità era scattare delle istantanee sulle contraddizioni dell’attualità, sulla nostalgia del passato e sulle sensazioni allarmanti del presente, il tutto visto attraverso la lente fish-eye della sua instancabile penna creativa.

“Barn”, pur essendo un disco di alti e bassi, sottolinea la strabiliante essenzialità delle sue composizioni e la capacità di usare strutture e parole semplici, ma di riuscire sempre a trovare la chiave per emozionare, per far riflettere mischiando ingenuità e saggezza.

Ci sono i momenti acustici alla “Harvest” con armonica e fisarmonica a spalleggiarsi sotto la voce tremolante, come la traccia ecologista “Song Of The Season” o il blues-rock sferragliante e ruvido della svolta elettrica di ”Zuma” nell’autobiografica “Heading West”, e non mancano neanche le sonorità ruggenti anni Novanta della fase “Freedom” e “Ragged Glory”, come nel giusto endorsement a favore di Mother Nature “Human Race” o “Canamerican”, l’orgoglioso inno alle due nazionalità del signor Young, ottenute giusto in tempo per votare Biden alle ultime elezioni.

Spariglia un po’ le carte il pezzo più riuscito dell’album, il tormentato “They Might Be Lost”, che con la sua armonica alla “Nebraska” fa respirare l’ansia e la desolazione per i tanti compagni di strada mancati lungo il percorso.

Ma Neil sa anche essere romantico senza far venire le carie ai denti, con la dichiarazione d’amore alla dolce metà Daryl Hannah in “Shape Of You” e il suo ritornello sbilenco e l’andamento caracollante.

Sempre a suo agio con il blues, come l’honky-tonk di “Change Ain’t Gonna” o le ballate nostalgiche per piano a bassa intensità come “Tumblin’ Thru The Years” e il cullante monito finale “Don’t Forget Love”.

Con “Welcome Back” siamo negli anni 70, per 8 minuti si fluttua nelle atmosfere dilatate alla “Cortez The Killer” con la Gibson di Young a ricamare melodie finemente intrecciate sui soffici accordi di Nils Logfren e alle tessiture ritmiche dei Crazy Horse lasciati al piccolo trotto.

In questo brano, come in tutto “Barn”, Neil dimostra una volta di più di essere ancora un hippie che cammina sull’arcobaleno, ma che sa anche guardare alla vita di noi umani con occhio attento, vivace e soprattutto partecipe. E anche se ogni brano ha, probabilmente, un riferimento simile nella sua sterminata discografia, alla fine ti frega sempre e comunque.

Come racconta “Heading West” dopo la separazione dal marito e il conseguente trasferimento ad ovest, la mamma regalò la prima chitarra al piccolo Neil. Ringraziando la mamma per il regalo azzeccato, chiudiamo le porte del fienile e lasciamo che Neil e suoi compari continuino a suonare: magari ci faranno un regalo anche a noi, un “Barn 2”, e non sarebbe per niente male.
