Dire che il secondo opus in studio spartito tra Neil Young e i giovani Promise Of The Real capeggiati dai figli di Willie Nelson, “The Visitor” – seguito di “Monsanto Years” (2015) – ha risultati misti, è dire nulla. Rimane di certo lampante, anzi cristallina come non mai, la direttrice attivista, dapprima ambientalista e poi via via anti-Trump, dunque ora persino apertamente patriottica.

Se “Already Great” si limita ancora a riciclare il suo classico boogie elettrificato, la combinazione nell’anti-inno “Children Of Destiny” (pubblicato come singolo il 4 luglio, ndr) è letale, talmente orrida da divenire per contrasto contagiosa: passo bombastico da marching-band esplosiva, fanfare trionfali, liriche paternalistiche e, colpo gobbo, una strofa in stile musical per bimbi. Le ballate acustiche, più sciolte, da “Almost Always” alla scanzonata “Change Of Heart”, fino a culminare nella chilometrica “Forever”, a metà via tra visione commossa e parodia della sua “Ambulance Blues”, suonano decentemente ispirate.

Questo saliscendi scenico-stilistico-emotivo genera una sorta di mostriciattolo, “Carnival”, ibrido di latinoamericano alla Santana e vaudeville sardonico alla Tom Waits, di certo poco avvincente e di certo male organizzata, ma anche armata di uno humour inedito, per il Loner, colto in una rilettura tagliente del nuovo mito americano. E poi viene il solito, palloso avvertimento ecologista, ancora debitore del disco  predecessore, “Stand Tall”; anche questo numero in qualche modo ne esce comunque bene, la furia che lo riporta al “Ragged Glory” dei suoi Crazy Horse è tutta neilyounghiana.

Per quanto sgraziato polpettone di stereotipi, d’invettive da opinionista corrivo incapace di guardare in profondità il momento storico (ma non è nemmeno colpa di Young), e nonostante i Promise non suonino nemmeno vagamente all’altezza della E-Street degli anni ruggenti, è un disco che, specie nell’ultimo periodo del canadese, si fa ricordare e cerca di replicare il “Born In The Usa” di Springsteen (si giustifica così: “I’m Canadian By The Way/ And I Love The Usa”). Come “Peace Trail” (2016), ma con un tono maiuscolo e qualche punta di delirio. Pubblicato nello stesso giorno dell’apertura del “Neil Young Archives”, il sito streaming del suo intero corpus (ma i sospirati lost album ancora mancano), come aveva anticipato il live d’archivio “Hitchhiker” (2017).
