L'ennesimo contatto con la sofferenza dell'ormai sessantenne Neil Young (l'aneurisma che lo ha colpito nella primavera del 2005, ndr) ha isolato e contrapposto in modo più deciso due delle componenti principali del suo cosmo di supremo auteur rock. Da una parte continuiamo ad avere il loner acustico, quello di "Prairie Wind", sempre più bisognoso di atmosfere rustiche e casalinghe. Dall'altra si fa avanti un bandleader più elettrificato, impegnato e rabbioso che mai. "Living With War", il frutto di questo inedito progetto, è così totalmente proteso verso l'attualità della politica internazionale statunitense, orientata alla tenacia bellicista dell'amministrazione Bush-Rice. Una vera e propria presa di posizione politico-sociale che è realmente in grado di iniettare nuova carica (e nuovo senso, dopo il prolisso mega-concept di "Greendale") al proverbiale feedback di Young.

Anzitutto c'è il titolo, sovrapponibile sintatticamente (e non solo) a "Landing On Water". Quindi i retroscena di realizzazione, pure questi analoghi al (pessimo) disco del 1986: line-up ad hoc che esclude i Crazy Horse e adotta trombettista, sezione ritmica e addirittura un coro di un centinaio di voci, e altissima priorità compositiva e realizzativa (addirittura un instant record, se si pensa che la registrazione è durata appena tre giorni). In entrambi i casi c'è un messaggio di ribellione; in "Landing" sussisteva, tra le righe, un conguaglio a metà tra l'ipotesi di un disco anti-commerciale in risposta alle esigenze di Mr. Geffen e la malacopia di genere, "Living" è invece animato da un qualcosa di più assennato, da una maggiore coscienza civile e collettiva (la guerra, per l'appunto), da uno spirito di concept-album di ben altro spessore.

Infine, la tracklist: come per il degenerato predecessore, le tracce sono dieci. Ma anche qui lo spirito è chiaramente diverso. Dall'attacca deciso di "After The Garden", un riff caldo e sporco, un folk-southern-fuzz che ingloba la batteria in seconda battuta e il refrain del coro trattato con levità alla fine della strofa, al toccante spiritual conclusivo di "America The Beautiful", ciò che conta è soprattutto una gerarchia strumentale. In primis viene la chitarra di Young, il propulsore energetico di queste personali concertazioni di protesta. E' questa a scodellare brani come il già citato "After The Garden", o il dialogo esacerbato tra Young e il coro di "The Restless Consumer", o "Lookin' For A Leader", o l'anthem di "Shock And Awe", il tutto con poche-minime divagazioni, ma anzi limitandosi a fornire un vibrante corredo accordale. Nella quasi dylaniana "Roger And Out", la stessa chitarra riesce a far placare l'impeto della batteria e a far emergere l'ennesima reincarnazione del folksinger attivista.

Il coro, in ogni caso, svolge una parte non secondaria. "America The Beautiful", come si diceva, è il punto di massima inversione gerarchica (tacciono tutti gli altri, Young compreso), in cui i cento cantanti (solisti compresi) sembrano tratteggiare l'inno nazionale statunitense con afflato pastorale. Prima ancora ci sono "Families", cavalcata consapevole e sguardo commosso di Young dai risvolti gospel, e "Flags Of Freedom", sua logica continuazione e ideale cerchio morale di condivisione con le altre due grandi voci americane: Dylan e Springsteen. La tromba di Tommy Bray, oltre a rafforzare questi momenti accorati, emerge anche e soprattutto nei registri eroici da inno civile. E' il caso di "Shock And Awe" e della canzone più pubblicizzata (ma anche la meno interessante), "Let's Impeach The President", con unisono tra Young, coro e tromba.

C'è ampio spazio alle critiche più disparate (la scoperta dell'acqua calda della guerra che ci accompagna giorno dopo giorno, l'ingenuità, la smania di demagogia, il punto di vista non perfettamente a fuoco), ma l'esasperazione e la spontaneità, così come dev'essere un semplice gesto di rivendicazione, sono fatte salve. Neil Young è vivo e lotta con il suo popolo. A modo suo, come sempre: una brutta bestia che prende la rincorsa dai requiem di "Like A Hurricane", "Sleeps With Angels" e "Tonight's The Night", finanche da "Barstool Blues" ("Zuma", cfr.) e dalla seconda facciata di "Rust Never Sleeps", lascia a casa i fronzoli, e va fino in fondo. Le analogie con "Landing On Water" non sono finite; ogni traccia dell'album sarà accompagnata da un videoclip, ma anche in questo caso non c'è il pericolo di retorica. Non ci sarà nessuno Young delirante conduttore-inviato di News inesistenti, ma crudi montaggi di servizi televisivi, a mettere le molteplici vie della tragedia quotidiana una a fianco dell'altra.
