Passata la sua personale demagogia anti-Bush di "Living With War" (e i dischi-recupero di "Chrome Dreams 2" e soprattutto dei due bootleg live di pregio), Neil Young approda ancora all'attualità mondiale con un nuovo disco "a pretesto" (non propriamente "a tema"), stavolta larvatamente Obama-oriented. "Fork In The Road" è così dedicato alle problematiche ecologico-ambientali, e alle cosiddette "fonti energetiche alternative". Il punto di vista, manco a dirlo, è quello delle automobili – una delle passioni del loner canadese – e delle "Lincoln" in modo particolare. Come in "Living With War" Young si rimangiava la sua leggendaria introversione, in "Fork In The Road" si rimangia il suo amore per prendere posizione contro l'inquinamento e il mercato del petrolio. L'operazione vale più come mero pretesto che come opera d'arte.

A parte lo sciapo rock sudista di "Johnny Magic" (che si porta ancora dietro la logorrea di "Greendale"), il disco rimpolpa la chitarra del leader – di nuovo privata dei Crazy Horse – di cori hippie in "Just Singing a Song", di soul motown in "Fuel Line", del passo quasi west-coast rap in "Cough Up The Bucks". Ma questi brani debordano gratuitamente nel comico involontario.

Young prova poi a ritagliarsi uno spazio per un blando lento con organo gospel ("Off The Road") e una ballata folkish vecchio stile ("Light a Candle"), che, accostata alla soavità fantasmagorica di "Harvest", suona come pura muzak. Quindi riprende toni possenti in "Get Behind The Wheel", con cui rispolvera persino l'imbarazzante honky-tonk di "Everybody's Rockin'" (ma stavolta innervandolo di un generico spirito di rocker di razza) e in "Hit The Road", la risposta da macho a "Off The Road".

Con l'ormai usuale accompagnamento video (che lo vede nuovamente star sui generis), con il singolo "Cough Up The Bucks" e svariati brani distribuiti gratuitamente via myspace, e con il pretesto "corale" proveniente da "Living With War" (che stavolta non regge), le dieci tracce hanno un mood sfacciatamente arioso, in linea con il supporto alla conversione da consumo a benzina a consumo elettrico delle "Lincvolt", brevettate da Jon Goodwin. Nondimeno, hanno assorbito il modus operandi degli ultimi decorsi del vegliardo autore: la scrittura di getto, che evita spesso e volentieri di guardarsi indietro preferendo puntare all'istintività (resa competente dall'esperienza), ignorando erroracci di arrangiamento e banalità. Preludio alla fantomatica pubblicazione del primo volume dei mitici "Archives".
