Chiamate a raccolta alcune delle sue canzoni a sfondo naturalista, aggiunte quelle dell’album che ne fa da sorgente – “Monsanto Years” (2015) -, confezionato il tutto con campionamenti di versi d’animali e insetti, tuoni e fruscii e amenità assortite, Neil Young alza la posta della nuova crociata ecologista spalleggiato dai giovani Promise Of The Real con il doppio live “Earth”.

Nessun motivo realmente musicale giustifica la sua esistenza, a parte una “Love And Only Love” estesa a suite di ventotto minuti, una significativa aggiunta al processo di trasformazione dei suoi classici in maratone sfinenti, un processo che parte da “Live Rust” (1978), passa per “Weld” (1991) e termina proprio con quel primo volume di “Road Rock” (2000) che è il suo ultimo album live prima del presente, eccettuati i recenti ripescaggi d’archivio.

Gli altri brani tratti da “Ragged Glory” (1990), dall’inno “Mother Earth” eseguito all’organo a “Country Home”, così come gli altri classici (“Vampire Blues”, già più indovinata per via dell’apporto delle percussioni rispettose dell’originale, una frignona “After The Gold Rush”), sono poco più di piacevole sottofondo. Non fa testo nemmeno il ritrovamento curioso, una “Hippie Dream” presa da uno dei più infausti dischi del suo più infausto decennio, “Landing On Water” (1986): Young non ripete il miracolo che gli era invece riuscito trasformando in versione acustica “Transformer Man” per l'”Unplugged” datato 1993.

I brani di “Monsanto”, la maggior porzione dell’opera, acquistano perlopiù un belletto nuovo. Manca la canzone migliore, “Workin’ Man”, ma in compenso vi è un inedito peperino, “Seed Justice”.

In realtà un po’ tutte le canzoni sono attutite, frenate persino, per farne uno sfondo di predicozzo retorico (che peccato sentire la bella “Western Hero” conciata così) che ha un germe o meglio un virus in “Who’s Gonna Stand Up” di “Storytone” (2014). In questo Young è per assurdo aiutato dagli stessi musicisti, in parte bravi scolaretti e in parte goffi assaltatori del suono. Completano il quadro clinico gli animali e i temporali che intervengono a casaccio nello svolgimento del brano in stile “vecchia fattoria”, o mischiati tra gli applausi a simboleggiare la natura in ascolto a fianco del pubblico – capito la finezza? – o, peggio, sostituiti a quel leggendario feedback che apriva e chiudeva le sue canzoni negli anni ruggenti, e che aveva persino partorito un piccolo monumento di pittura sonora, “Arc” (1991): quello sì un gioiello di post-produzione. Disponibile sul suo Pono e Tidal, niente iTunes.
