Dopo le vastissime meditazioni distorte e le nuove maratone elettriche del doppio “Psychedelic Pill”, percorse con l’aiuto dei ritrovati Crazy Horse anche live in tour (con pure qualche data italiana), Neil Young torna acustico, solo, anzi più solo che mai, e nuovamente sacrificato alla produzione come per “Le Noise”, con “A Letter Home”.
Stavolta si tratta dunque di una serie di cover registrate con la sola chitarra, in una cabina telefonica e direttamente su vinile, per ottenere una qualità da rullo fonografico (l’antenato del disco), quindi molto al di sotto dei bootleg, persino da fare il verso ai field recordings d’archeologia di Alan Lomax.
Tra Bob Dylan, Phil Ochs, Willie Nelson e Bruce Springsteen, tutti impastati in questo procedimento d’invecchiamento del suono, spunta anche – finalmente – la sua versione di quella “Needle Of Death” di Bert Jansch che gli ispirò uno dei suoi capolavori, “Ambulance Blues”; purtroppo però anche questa diventa una nenia inascoltabile.
Con “Americana” è il secondo albo di cover. Uno scherzetto postmoderno – introdotto da una finta lettera alla madre -, e un risaputo atto d’amore verso le antiche tecnologie, inservibile almeno quanto il lettore digitale Pono da lui brevettato nello stesso periodo. La più estrema e gratuita tra le tante eccentricità del canadese, e non è un complimento: è il coma profondo di stile e personalità artistica. Uscito ufficialmente nel settimo “Record Store Day” (19 aprile 2014) per la Third Man di Jack White, poi espanso in edizione deluxe in doppio 33 giri con versione audiophile.
