Nell’era dell’ultimo ritrovato dell’industria discografica, il lost album, non poteva mancare Neil Young, colui che ha fatto di dischi perduti e pubblicazioni d’archivio quasi una prassi. A una serie di riproposizioni d’incisioni, registrazioni dal vivo esplicite come “Live At Massey Hall” (2007) e “Live At The Cellar Door” (2013), o meno, come “Songs For Judy” (2018), o session acustiche come “Hitchhiker” (2017), tutte risalenti al suo periodo al contempo artisticamente più brillante ed emotivamente più fosco, gli anni 70, per cercare di mettere insieme quante più tessere possibili di un puzzle evidentemente ancora in divenire, mancava però il parto più sostanzioso, “Homegrown”, un disco in studio vociferato negli anni e a più riprese reso disponibile per vie corsare sulla base d’indiscrezioni e speculazioni, e coronamento ideale dei mai usciti “Archives vol. 2”. Una volta dato alla luce in via ufficiale è perciò come se una leggenda facesse il suo ingresso nella dimensione del reale.

Alcune canzoni già edite rimangono intonse: “Love Is A Rose”, già comparsa nel doppio antologico “Decade”, uno dei suoi brillanti stornelli acustici (con contrabbasso), qui in rime baciate, e le minori “Star Of Bethlehem” e “Little Wing”, poste a (deludente) chiusa dell’album. Altre appaiono nella loro versione originale, precedente al bagno di distorsione delle future versioni con i Crazy Horse, anzitutto l’eponima “Homegrown”, qui più scattante nel tempo e asciugata di quel tanto nell’arrangiamento pur sempre elettrificato, ma anche una “White Line” qui invece del tutto acustica, e impreziosita dal libero contrappunto della seconda acustica di Robbie Robertson.

Quindi i pezzi inediti. A stagliarsi è anzitutto la prima “Separate Ways”, splendida transizione tra l’umore lirico-rurale di “Harvest” e uno spirito ancor più sentimentale, persino parisienne. “Try” suona invece più convenzionalmente country-folk, con steel languida e gorgheggi di coriste, mentre “Mexico” è uno di quei suoi embrioni di ballata intima pianistica (“Love In Mind”, “The Bridge”).

E finalmente arrivano i momenti elettrificati, forse i migliori, per primo “Vacancy”, epico boogie a fare da “Come On Baby Let’s Go Downtown” del caso, e una “We Don’t Smoke It No More”, l’appuntamento con il rhythm’n’blues che lo Young di metà 70 onora di continuo, guidata dall’armonica e poi dall’elettrica raminga.

Registrato nel 1975 e scomparso per quattro decenni, a cui bisogna aggiungere un piccolo slittamento nell’uscita dovuto allo stop forzato da Covid-19, rimissato da John Hanlon, Chris Bellman e Bernie Grundman, tenuto nascosto perché ritenuto troppo personale, privato, un “down album” improntato alla rottura con Carrie Snodgress. Più che un “Harvest” minore è, infatti, un “Tonight’s The Night” rivolto al suo cuore infranto anziché ai lutti amicali. Di quel capolavoro condivide (oltre che lo stesso intorno d’anni) tanto il tono, meditabondo e tribolato, quanto la prassi zigzagante, gli arrangiamenti cangianti da brano a brano, che restituisce uno spettro espressivo eterogeneo per sondare e cantare il dolore da quanti più punti di vista possibili. E come “Tonight’s” s’orienta al clima più che alle singole canzoni: nessuna davvero memorabile, ma qualcuna pur pregna di quella lirica tragicità dello Young del periodo. Qualche punto trascurabile tra cui un evitabilissimo interludio, “Florida”. Tra le righe è pure il disco “The Band” del canadese (oltre a Robertson compaiono Stan Szelest e Levon Helm), ma c’è anche una Emmylou Harris ancora quasi esordiente. Successivamente incluso nel secondo volume degli “Archives” (2020).
