E il buon vecchio Neil esce dal granaio, dove ha registrato ll precedente album “Barn“, si toglie le scarpe prima di avventurarsi nel bosco e mentre cammina, scalzo, fischietta le melodie che andranno a comporre il nuovo album “World Record”.

Per trasformare in canzoni le melodie registrate col telefono in mezzo alla natura, l’hippie canadese chiama il guru della produzione Rick Rubin, che in quel periodo ha un buco libero nei suoi mitici Shangri-La Studios di Malibu. Quindi il 77enne Neil prende il primo volo dal Colorado alla California e chiama a raccolta i fidi Crazy Horse senza Frank “Poncho” Sampedro, ormai in pensione, ma rimpiazzato in pianta stabile da Nils Lofgren in libera uscita dalla E Street Band.

Sembra una favola a cui si può credere o meno, ma a volte i miti hanno bisogno di leggende per sostenerli e allora fidiamoci, perché, come dice il saggio Neil, “le cose se devono succedere succedono”. E a lui di cose ne succedono davvero tante, infatti dopo, dopo aver fatto uscire “Barn” a dicembre e dopo esser riuscito a far stampare e pubblicare “Toast”, un album rimasto nel cassetto dal 2001, in tempi record ha composto il nuovo album, il suo 42esimo.

Ma non aspettiamoci il nuovo “Le Noise“, prodotto con Daniel Lanois nel 2010. Rick Rubin ha un approccio più cauto, non stravolge il suono del cantautore canadese, ma la mano del produttore si sente nella fase di cattura dei suoni, che risultano molto naturali, ricchi di ambiente, e in una certa attenzione nel limare sbavature e imperfezioni del tollerante approccio younghiano.

La prima cosa che si nota è, che in “World Record” Neil trascura la chitarra per passare quasi tutto il tempo dietro a una tastiera, che sia il piano o l’organo a pompa. Sentire la voce di Young su un pianoforte rimanda subito a “After The Gold Rush“, ma purtroppo non siamo più nel 1970. Qui le canzoni hanno strutture semplici e i messaggi sono chiari, per arrivare a comunicare l’urgenza climatica, un concept su cui ruota tutto “World Record”, titolo programmatico di un tema ormai da tempo prioritario nel Neil Young pensiero.

“Love Earth” sembra proprio composta dalla stessa leggerezza che si percepisce camminando tra i boschi, ammirando il paesaggio con un filo di vento tra i capelli: ha un fascino un po’ retrò con il piano leggero, i coretti soffusi e la batteria spazzolata. Ben si intona con la foto in bianco e nero della copertina con ritratto il padre di Young.

Anche il piano da saloon di “Overhead”, impreziosito dall’armonica di Nils Lofgren, mantiene la stessa leggerezza. Resiste pure “I Walk With You (Earth Ringtone)”, quando la voce di Neil vola soffice su un tappeto di distorsione.

Poi, però, l’album comincia a mostrare la corda, con schemi già troppo sentiti nella ballata country “This Old Planet (Changing Days)” e nel blues sporco e scuro di “The World (Is In Trouble Now)”.

Sporchissimo anche il ritorno alla amata Gibson in “Break The Chain”, così sferragliante che le catene sembra quasi di averle ai piedi, e che, comunque, si rivela efficace anche come preparazione alla ormai canonica cavalcata chitarristica: con “Chevrolet”, infatti, si sale a bordo per un viaggio di quindici minuti con i finestrini abbassati, le mani sul volante d’avorio e la nostalgia per un passatempo così poco ecologico.

Come sempre, Neil scompone, trasforma, dilata il tema melodico nelle lunghe digressioni di “Chevrolet”, un gioco a cui siamo abituati, ma risentirlo non dà certo fastidio. Non dà fastidio neppure sentire il coro un po’ naif di “Walkin’ On The Road (To The Future)” che ripete “No more war/ Only love” con un sentimento che commuove per la convinzione e la perseveranza con cui viene lanciato. Sicuramente il vecchio Neil continuerà a cantarlo e prima o poi qualcuno gli darà retta. Forse.

Neil Young sorprende per vitalità ed energia, “World Record” sorprende meno, ma si attesta sullo stesso livello di “Barn”. Ora non resta che sperare che in questo slancio di vitalità il rocker canadese decida di trasformare “World Record” in un world tour. Dai Neil, ti aspettiamo.
