NICK CAVE - Push The Sky Away

Narratore, scrittore e poeta, attore, sceneggiatore, persino regista teatrale, accanto all’ormai usuale attività di compositore di colonne sonore (ultime in ordine cronologico “The Road” e “Lawless” del solito John Hillcoat). Mancava da un bel pezzo il Nick Cave che ha scolpito ineluttabilmente la storia della canzone d’autore, il Cave classico spalleggiato dai Bad Seeds, il re inchiostro. Eccolo dunque in “Push the Sky Away”, una raccolta lungamente attesa che serve più che altro all’autore come ennesima e sempre più purificatrice catarsi.

Così, il bardo abbandona anche gli ultimi esperimenti presenti nel predecessore “Dig Lazarus Dig” e soprattutto nelle intenzioni che hanno dato i natali al progetto Grinderman, e, più in generale, qualsiasi altro residuo apocalittico, e si distende come mai prima a rimirare il cielo e le sue leggi fisiche e spirituali.

Inizio e chiusa, “We No Who U R” e la title track, sono i suoi campioni di delicatezza nella sua carriera. La prima, con tanto di flauto e glissandi fatati, suona talmente pacata nell’accompagnamento che lambisce un reading poetico, mentre la seconda è una litania da cattedrale addirittura bisbigliata. Il problema è che sia Cave che i suoi comprimari non hanno per niente la stessa fantasia degli anni d’oro, nemmeno quando, come in “Walter’s Edge”, Cave prova ad alzare il tono in modo fastidiosamente retorico. La parola d’ordine è piuttosto la regolarità, soprattutto nell’impeccabile ballata di “Jubilee Streets”, che rispolvera il jingle-jangle psichedelico (con Ellis a scimmiottare il John Cale del caso), ma non esplode se non in dissolvenza e sottovoce.

Nonostante qualche fallimentare sussulto di rabbia, qui davvero stonata, l’album ha la stessa cupa intransigenza di un “Boatman’s Call”, quindi ulteriori tonnellate di autoreferenzialità, e suona come il geometrico opposto degli esordi con i Birthday Party. Il gospel crepuscolare di “Wide Lovely Eyes”, l’inferiore “Mermaids” (una pallidissima imitazione di “Foi Na Cruz”), la neoclassica, tediosa “We Real Cool”, sono risultanti del suo attuale viziaccio di poetar cantando a due passi dal talking blues generico. Prova ne è “Finishing Jubilee Streets”, sulla carta un’appendice di “Jubilee Streets”, in realtà preludio di “Higgs Boson Blues”, il brano simbolico in cui appare lampante la stanchezza senile che trascina e diluisce le canzoni.

Non una svolta nell’itinerario di Cave, ma uno dei tanti finali di storia, il più rarefatto, imbevuto di testi larvali e divagatori, e tutto sommato sinceri. Se ne sta in bilico tra direzione incerta e poesia insistita, leggiadria e lirismo greve, con una chiusa amara che ne corregge il sentimentalismo da feuilleton. A musicare le sue lacrime di coccodrillo c’è un recupero, un Barry Adamson che manca d’estro, un ruolo atmosferico ma poco sanguigno, Ellis, un coro femminile, e anche – per contrasto – una defezione non così irrilevante, Mick Harvey. Accondiscendente anche il solito Nick Launay, qui angelo spectoriano e non più chirurgo dell’espressionismo, alla produzione, mentre Hillcoat ricambia i favori dirigendo il video per “Jubilee Streets”.
