“White Lunar”, la doppia raccolta di musiche per cinema e teatro della coppia Nick Cave–Warren Ellis, non aveva solo dato una retrospettiva dell’attività parallela dei due musicisti australiani, ma aveva anche gettato un piccolo sguardo al futuro. In particolare, “White Lunar” conteneva anche brani tratti da “The Road”, film post-apocalittico del 2009 a firma di John Hillcoat (già incontrato ai tempi di “The Proposition”), in cui tutto è generico (“The Boy”, “The Father”, “The Wife” etc.), ma non ancora pubblicati come colonna sonora completa. A qualche mese da quegli ascolti, dunque, arriva la vera e propria, ufficiale “The Road”.
In questa score, accanto a musica cinefila perlopiù generica (ma anche pensosa, come per “Water And Ash”), emergono anche orchestrazioni da camera a più parti, specie in “Home” (fiati e tastiere), ma anche alcuni numeri abrasivi, “The Cannibals” e “The Cellar”, e soprattutto le dissonanze a mo’ di accordatura filarmonica di “The House”, un galop demonico che Cave non tentava addirittura dai tempi di “From Her To Eternity” (e, in parte, anche la severa “The Journey” e “The Family”, una prova di bravura di Ellis). In qualche modo avventurosa è pure la silente sospensione in sordina di “The Boy”.
Alternando melensaggini a momenti vacui ma cupi, lungaggini generiche a insistenze stilistiche, la partitura si fa qui e là imprendibile, pur rimanendo confinata su di un pericolante ponte tra due mondi: irrilevanza e disorientamento. Qualche brano merita l’ascolto più che altro per la limpida passione della premiata ditta.
