Tempo di rinascita, per Nick Cave. Se “Nocturama”, terzultimo album ufficiale coi Bad Seeds aveva ricevuto da più parti la nomea di peggior album dell’artista, se il pesante doppio cd “Abattoir Blues/The Lyre of Orpheus” aveva deluso in buona parte le aspettative, e – ultimo ma non ultimo – lo scadente triplo di “B-Sides & Rarities” aveva ulteriormente peggiorato l’andazzo generale, a partire dalla fine del 2005 il bardo australiano si è letteralmente reinventato una carriera, improntandola stavolta alla poliedricità spinta. Anzitutto arriva il cinema, dapprima come co-sceneggiatore per il western “The Proposition” di John Hillcoat, quindi come compositore di colonna sonora (lo stesso “The Proposition” e soprattutto la convincente score per “The Assassination Of Jesse James” di Andrew Dominik, in coppia con Warren Ellis), infine addirittura come attore provetto (il cameo nei panni di menestrello country nelle battute finali dello stesso “Jesse James”).

Quindi ritorna il bandleader, un ruolo che non rispolverava dai tempi gloriosi dei Birthday Party (e, prima ancora, dei Boys Next Door), con il vigoroso progetto Grinderman, un album di anthem scatenati e canzoni arroventate da devastanti scosse di feedback e frustate ritmiche, in cui figura per la prima volta alla chitarra elettrica, e non al suo strumento principe, il piano. Infine, ritorna a pieno titolo il Cave cantautore, spalleggiato come al solito dai Bad Seeds, con un nuovo disco solista, l’ideale terzo capitolo di una trilogia religiosa che comincia col capolavoro “The Good Son” e prosegue con il più recente “No More Shall We Part” (con tenui riferimenti a “Henry’s Dream”).

Catalizzando dunque le esperienze degli ultimi anni, Cave mette insieme un disco di canzoni compatte e briose, cinematiche e atmosferiche, persino più snelle nelle licenze creative (eretiche, verrebbe da dire), come forse mai prima d’ora si era udito.

Se il registro medio della title track di “Dig!!! Lazarus Dig!!!” sembra quello di una sofisticata parodia bonacciona dei Troggs di “Wild Thing” (o di una versione da automi di una goliardia avvinazzata stile Holy Modal Rounders), quello di “Albert Goes West” fa il verso al pub-rock più fracassone tendente al noise-rock aereo alla Band Of Susans, incorniciato da gorgheggi corali, canto Reed-iano e tempo puntato (con tanto di variazioni e strappi dinamici).

Le altre anomalie di percorso, “Moonland” su tutte, indugiano in andamenti soul-percussivi – sia elettronici che suonati – e un canto suadente da crooner desertico (che narra di un viaggio alla ricerca dell’amata in una terra ostile, in luogo di una personale apocalisse). Invece, “We Call Upon The Author”, al limite dell’ossessivo, azzarda un battito motorik ricolmo di scariche elettriche e organetto ondeggiante, un refrain delirante (un author che forse è un’invocazione a sé stesso) intersecato da rotture quasi hip-hop industrial alla Dalek.

Cave riprende il controllo della situazione (ma sempre lasciando ampia libertà creativa ai Bad Seeds) in canzoni come “Hold On To Yourself”, una delle sue più moralistiche dell’intera carriera, che si spartisce equamente tono rabbuiato e paludoso, spinte strumentali rumoristiche, e canto depresso degno dello Springsteen acustico e “Jesus Of The Moon”, tipica del Nick Cave indolenzito post-“No More Shall We Part” (ma forte di un sottofondo di glissando acquatico).

Un miglior bilanciamento tra innovazione e conservazione giunge – non a caso – nei pezzi migliori. La lunga “More News From Nowhere”, a prendere forma da un loop etereo-riverberato, da un andamento da U2 metafisici circa “Joshua Tree” (ma reso ancor più nevrotico), da un motto corale che dischiude sentimenti accorati, finisce per diventare una requisitoria-fiume Dylan-iana sotto mentite spoglie, continuamente sostenuta e rigenerata dalla sezione ritmica e da armonie svianti (anche se mai davvero shockante). “Today’s Lesson” espone foga collettiva e declamato melodioso tipico del Cave cantante, ma tende a deflagrare sotto le spinte dei loop stranianti di Ellis (anche se qua e là sembra di sentire una outtake dei Grinderman), mentre “Night Of The Lotus Eaters” attacca da un giro industrialoide e dai bisbigli di Cave che confluiscono in un refrain gelido a più voci, attacchi in crescendo, stridori acuti e percussioni silenti di vario tipo (tribali, tintinnanti, disturbanti). Infine, si adagia in una sorta di severo divertissement attorniato semplicemente da chitarre, cori e chorus distorto (“Lie Down Here”, una power-ballad che è la sua personale pace dei sensi).

Sagace nelle atmosfere, pepato nelle movenze (specie nella seconda parte), è un disco – registrato da Terry Britton, titolare dell’Ark Studio di Londra, e prodotto da Nick Launay – che ripristina e corregge, e rifulge solo a tratti.

L’immagine ideale di predicatore folgorato e un tantinello invasato, quella che Cave si è costruito non troppo pazientemente a partire da “Good Son”, si ritrova qui contorta, attorcigliata su sé stessa, non più scarnificata ma ipersatura, anche se (o proprio perché) il tema è quello più importante di tutti (la vita oltre la vita). Logica diversa, stessi intenti, al limite dell’operazione nostalgica che sconfina nel superficiale: la scrittura ormai deliberatamente trasandata del Cave più ovvio dell’universo è simbiosi delle trovate dei Bad Seeds, finalmente attivi dopo la dipartita di Blixa Bargeld nel 2003, dai preparati sonori come sostrati (i loop di Warren Ellis, più Velvet-iano che mai) alle sciabordate (Mick Harvey, Martyn Casey), dalle divagazioni ai rimbalzi fonici (Jim Sclavunos, Thomas Wydler).
