Due anni fa, Nick Cave and Warren Ellis s’immergevano nella vita di Marilyn Monroe nel pregevole “Blonde” di Andrew Dominick. Adesso, la storia – purtroppo anche questa priva di lieto fine – vede una nuova protagonista femminile direttamente dal mondo della musica. Per “Back To Black”, biopic su Amy Winehouse diretto da Sam Taylor-Johnson, sono state rilasciate due colonne sonore. “Back To Black (Songs From The Original Motion Picture)” composta dai brani della protagonista e dalle canzoni degli altri musicisti presenti durante le visione, e “Back To Black (Original Motion Picture Score)” con le composizioni originali di Nick Cave and Warren Ellis.
Il risultato del lavoro del duo è minimo, sotto vari aspetti: ventiquattro minuti di ascolto, composto da brevi frammenti. Prodotti insieme a Giles Martin, si avvicendano i capitoli delle tappe più significative della breve e tormentata esistenza della cantante. Momenti più fluttuanti sostenuti dal flauto che si concentrano nella parte iniziale del lavoro, scorci oscuri ( “Sort Yourselves Out”) e passaggi più astratti e sussurrati (“At The Taxi”, “Snooker Hall”, gli archi di “The End” ).
Tra tutti, spicca la più articolata “Soho To Glastonbury”, in bilico tra “Skeleton Tree” e “Ghosteen”. Un lavoro che nemmeno nella pellicola riesce a spiccare, “schiacciato” da quanto fatto artisticamente dalla Winehouse e dalle altre composizioni della “Songs From The Original Motion Picture”.
A salvare l’operazione in cui onestamente Cave e Ellis ci sembrano sprecati, la splendida composizione “Song For Amy“, dove ai manti strumentali già ascoltati si aggiunge la sentita performance vocale del Re Inchiostro.
