Il mondo poetico di Nick Cave è fatto di carne e sangue, spirito e anima, dannazione e redenzione, paura e speranza, timore e tremore, luce e vita. Si nutre del succo proibito e dannato del blues, attinge al riscatto cercato dal folk, ruba la perentorietà del funk, cavalca l'estro del country, si ammanta della morbosità del cinismo velvettiano, scalfisce la soavità del gospel, muore di languore punk. E rinasce come la fenice dalle ceneri in nuova, sgargiante forma, più forte, come la vita che ha attraversato la morte.

La carriera ultraventennale di Nick the Stripper assume il carattere di un rovinoso viaggio all'interno dell'uomo stesso: la dipendenza, l'ossessione, l'odio, la speranza. E' arte massimamente esistenziale nel suo continuo oggettivarsi nel prodotto, alienata copia di un creatore già lontano. I Boys Next Door e i Birthday Party erano la celebrazione del caos più primitivo, figli bastardi del punk e della new wave più malati; poi, con i Bad Seeds la ricerca di un maggiore controllo creativo, che progressivamente lo ha portato ad abbracciare il crooning sinatriano e una posa da balladeer navigato e disilluso.

"Abattoir Blues/ The Lyre of Orpheus" è l'ultimo capitolo di un percorso di ricerca e progressiva, per quanto sempre imperfetta, illuminazione. Un doppio album, progetto ambizioso a dimostrare come, dopo il pallore etereo di "Nocturama" e le sue pericolose sviate pop, ci sia ancora tantissima ispirazione e la capacità di mantenere intatto il proprio potere creativo.

"Get Ready For Love", in apertura, è un'adrenalinica corsa verso il crepaccio, il cavaliere esperto nel domare l'animale, l'aria attraversata dalle numinose voci femminili del London Community Gospel Choir, pezzo trash all'insegna del Cave più rapido e scanzonato, rock impetuoso e festante. "Cannibal's Hymn" è ballata rock in difesa delle capacità salvifiche dell'arte, il ritmo scandito da una chitarra oscillante e trattenuta: "But if you're gonna dine with them cannibals/ Sooner or later, darling, you're gonna get eaten". "Hiding All Away" è "Murder Ballads" sparato insieme a Robert Johnson e Mick Jagger nel fuoco sacro del noise-blues, l'esaltazione lussuriosa e ammaliante del peccato. "Nature Boy", il primo singolo estratto dall'album, è la faccia buona della medaglia, con sull'altro lato "Bring It On": impasto sonoro che riecheggia l'orecchiabilità mai superficiale degli REM di "Out Of Time".

"Fable Of The Brown Ape" chiude il primo atto dell'opera raccontando una storia, in fondo la stessa con cui si apre "The Lyre of Orpheus", sadica e maledetta reinterpretazione dell'antico mito greco su un swing ipnotico e vorticoso. "O Children" suggella un'opera eccellente con la medesima disillusione universale di "Sorrow's Child" e il pianto cosmico di "Weeping Song", ballata cristallina ed emozionante in perfetto stile Cave ultima maniera.

Nel mezzo, un insieme di pezzi convincenti: parole come saltimbanchi sulle note in "Messiah Ward", il mesmerismo di "Abattoir Blues", la pastorale "Breathless", l'incespicante ed epica "Easy Money", la rutilante "Supernaturally".

Cave ha abbandonato le paludose "muddy waters" dell'autodistruzione e ha assunto l'essere un musicista come una vera professione, con tanto di rigidi orari quotidiani. La nostalgia per il passato eroinomane e nichilista non implica il rimpianto: affinato il songwriting in sintonia con i propri mutamenti interiori, Nick Cave ha saputo e riesce ancora oggi a risultare convincente in maniera profondamente diversa, ma in fondo coerente, dai tempi in cui, nudo, percuoteva sé stesso sugli strumenti durante le esibizioni dal vivo. I Bad Seeds ne costituiscono il necessario corollario sonoro, qui in formazione a 7 con Martyn P. Casey al basso, Warren Ellis (Dirty Three) al violino, mandolino, flauto e bouzouki (parente irlandese della chitarra), l'amico di vecchia data Mick Harvey alle chitarre, James Johnston all'organo, Conway Savage al piano (suonato com'è noto anche dallo stesso Cave), Thomas Wydler e Jim Sclavunous (il musicista più alto del mondo) alla batteria.

Unici nèi riscontrabili in quest'opera sono forse la presenza di alcuni vuoti d'ispirazione ("There She Goes, My Beautiful World"), una sporadica frizione tra la poetica dei testi e una certa scontatezza della musica ("Let The Bells Ring", dedicata al defunto e rimpianto Johnny Cash) e qua e là un abuso dell'elemento coristico, che invece di fare da contrappunto alla voce di Cave sembra prendere il sopravvento.

Il valore complessivo di "Abattoir Blues/ The Lyre Of Orpheus" risulta comunque ben oltre la sufficienza e, se non raggiunge il livello dei capolavori del passato ("Firstborn Is Dead", "The Good Son "), conferma una ritrovata vena creativa di cui continueremo a seguire con attenzione gli sviluppi.
