Di questo disco si parla da mesi: la nuova incarnazione di Nick Cave, il ritorno alle origini, ai fasti dei Birthday Party e via chiacchierando. Bene, a nostro parere non è proprio così, ma forse è meglio, prima di addentrarci nella materia “Grinderman”, chiarire un paio di presupposti essenziali.

Primo. A parere del vostro recensore, Nick Cave ha smesso di pubblicare dischi che non fossero rilevanti soltanto per i fan e gli aficionados con “The Boatman’s Call” – incluso – ovvero una decina di anni fa, spanna più, spanna meno. Il resto ci paiono buone prove, ma più che altro note a pié di pagina della splendida carriera di un personaggio-unico-e-devastante-maturato-e-trasformatosi-in-cantautore-di- prima-classe.

Secondo. Il tempo passa per tutti.

Detto questo, il giudizio, irrevocabile: “Grinderman” ci pare un disco pienamente riuscito, parto (soprattutto, ma non soltanto) del Nick Cave maturo e lucidissimo dell’ultimo decennio, senza che si sprechino esultanze in nome del ritorno ai fasti di un tempo eccetera.

Non c’è dubbio che la riduzione a quartetto dell’orchestra Bad Seeds – con l’estromissione dal nucleo creativo del fondamentale Mick Harvey, che letteralmente da una vita accompagna Cave nelle sue scorribande – abbia giovato al prodotto finale: poco pianoforte, molte bizzarrie di chitarra o (soprattutto) di violino elettrificato e quindi distorto, effettato eccetera, e soprattutto un’asciuttezza complessiva che ci pare un miglioramento decisissimo rispetto all’ultimo doppio album di Cave. Come non c’è dubbio che l’approccio più frivolo e meno mediato alla materia abbia sfornato canzoni di buona statura, molto più maleducate, stringate, concise e immediate del solito.

L’unico appunto può essere che sono passati più o meno venticinque anni dall’epoca in cui gli eccessi musicali di Nick Cave erano parto di un’irruenza e di una sfacciataggine tutte giovanili; oggi, anche nei momenti più furiosi, a prevalere sono il mestiere e una invidiabile lucidità. Il che non è affatto un difetto – è soltanto per dire che i Birthday Party è meglio cercarli altrove, ecco.

Anzi, pensiamo che i Birthday Party non sia nemmeno il caso di scomodarli. Se un Cave del passato torna alla mente, ascoltando i passaggi più riusciti di “Grinderman”, è quello di “The Firstborn Is Dead” (in trame qui più asciutte e strutturate, vicine a un’idea più classica di rock and roll) oppure di “Tender Prey” (con molta meno cupezza, molti meno eccessi). Analisi confermata dall’andamento dei primi quattro ineccepibili brani del disco: “Get It On” si aggrappa su uno scheletro chitarristico bruciante e ripetitivo, e inaugura la scaletta alla grande; “No Pussy Blues” le è degna compare, incalza e scuote; “Electric Alice” e “Grinderman” sospendono la partita rock e impongono una sosta inquietante – con un Cave solenne come non sentivamo da tempo.

Quindi, una sferzata rock/soul, con “Depth Charge Ethel”, pezzo concitato e inquieto inaugurato da un ficcante bicordo di organo distorto.

Poi, una sequenza di brani più “normali” e vicini ai momenti migliori del Cave recente. “Go Tell the Women” e “I Don’t Need You (To Set Me Free)” girano attorno a riff di basso, la prima scarna e quasi soul, la seconda più muscolosa e dominata dagli archi, in forma sia di tappeto in sottofondo, sia di stilettate che giocano con la voce solista.

“Honey Bee” è costruita con la stessa formula coinvolgente di “Ethel”, con le punteggiature di organo e altre elettricità che piovono ovunque. E come fossimo scesi dalle montagne russe, la pausa di tranquillità di “Man In The Moon” (unico vero episodio smorto dell’album, per quanto ci riguarda), l’intorbidimento di “When My Love Comes Down” – ottima riproposizione della ballata cupa e inquieta anche strumentalmente di cui Cave è maestro – e il gran finale rock di “Love Bomb”, con il violino elettrificato per l’ennesima volta sugli scudi.

Insomma, non crediamo affatto che nelle intenzioni di Cave e soci (non li abbiamo ancora nominati: Warren Ellis, Martin Casey, Jim Sclavunous) ci fosse alcun “ritorno alle origini” di cui sopra: a conti fatti, i Grinderman sono una versione più agile, sbarazzina ed efficace degli ultimi Bad Seeds, che a parer nostro ha consentito a Nick Cave di dare alle stampe uno dei dischi più convincenti della sua carriera da una decina di anni a questa parte. Ne prendiamo atto con piacere e attendiamo di vedere i quattro alle prese con la versione dal vivo del nuovo repertorio. Scommettiamo che ci sarà da divertirsi.
