"Nocturama", dodicesima tappa del percorso di Nick Cave affiancato dai fedeli Bad Seeds, non è un disco riuscito. O meglio non è un disco all'altezza dello standard cui Cave e i Bad Seeds ci hanno abituato fin dal primo "From Her to Eternity", anno 1984.

Nick Cave ha ormai raggiunto a pieno diritto lo status di "classico", forte di una sequela pressoché ininterrotta di capolavori, alcuni realmente epocali ("Tender Prey" e "The Good Son" sono forse il punto massimo raggiunto dalla canzone d'autore negli ultimi 20 anni) altri forse meno compiuti, ma sempre incredibilmente veri e sofferti (gli ultimi "Boatman's Call" e "No More Shall We Part"): pochissimi nella storia del rock sono paragonabili a lui quanto a capacità di arrivare nei recessi più profondi e dolorosi dell'animo, di saper "raccontare", non esorcizzare, ma solo esprimere i propri demoni interiori sotto forma di liriche e melodie di rara bellezza. Canzoni, quelle di Cave, in cui dolcezza e violenza, dannazione e catarsi si fondono e si mescolano in continuazione segnando un coinvolgimento emotivo che forse solo gente come Jim Morrison o Leonard Cohen hanno saputo esprimere con altrettanta perfezione.

A tutto questo si è aggiunto poi il valore musicale dei Bad Seeds, un "supergruppo" d'altri tempi, uno dei più grandi complessi di sempre: quale altra formazione può vantare musicisti poliedrici e raffinati come Mick Harvey, virtuosi come Warren Ellis, personaggi carismatici e geniali come Blixa Bargeld e Jim Sclavunos?

Eppure tutto ciò che ha reso già immortale l'opera di Cave e soci, in "Nocturama" si avverte a malapena. Registrato in una sola settimana negli studi di casa, i SingSing di Melbourne, con accanto Nick Launey il produttore dell'epoca dei Birthday Party, l'album vorrebbe essere, nelle intenzioni di Cave, il primo tassello di una trilogia che segnerà un ritorno alla semplicità musicale delle origini, senza quegli arrangiamenti ricercati e preziosi che caratterizzavano i suoi dischi da "Tender Prey" in poi.

Intento lodevole ma non supportato, almeno in questo caso, dal risultato finale. La fretta con cui il disco è stato concepito si sente tutta, come anche il ritrovato equilibrio interiore del cantautore australiano: il disco non ha la compattezza emotiva, prima ancora che musicale, del passato e praticamente ogni brano del Cave "pacificato" di questo album fa rimpiangere quei tormenti che avevano dato vita a tanti capolavori. Perché fino ad oggi ogni disco di Nick Cave conteneva almeno un capolavoro (e il più delle volte i brani erano quasi tutti, se non addirittura tutti, capolavori): "Nocturama", invece, non ne ha nemmeno uno, nessun pezzo spicca particolarmente. Tra le ballate nessuna è degna del suo repertorio abituale, la più riuscita è forse "Rock of Gibraltar": certo non "Bring It On", il primo singolo, quasi una canzone pop, gradevole ma debole e poco ispirata anche nell'uso dell'ospite Chris Bailey; e sono solo sporadici gli episodi che rispolverano la sua verve di narratore "maledetto" ("Dead Man in my Bed") o che danno modo ai Bad Seeds di sfoderare tutto il loro talento e il loro invidiabile affiatamento (la lunghissima jam finale "Babe I'm on Fire").

In sostanza: un passo falso, forse il primo vero passo falso della sua carriera, che oltretutto non fa ben sperare per il futuro perché, a detta di Cave, anche i prossimi lavori saranno sulla falsariga di questo. Resta a questo punto solo da sperare che il "bardo di Melbourne" riscopra, dentro di sé, che qualcuno dei suoi antichi demoni è ancora sveglio.
