Lasciamo per ottanta minuti da parte gli originali, evitiamo la ricerca di confronti improponibili, o peggio ancora di sfide contro un ingombrante passato. Qui ci sono quindici band italiane emergenti di grande spessore che intendono semplicemente rendere omaggio a una delle più importanti band della storia della musica rock, l’ennesimo progetto iper-meritevole curato da Marco Gargiulo, dopo i fortunati esperimenti realizzati nel 2011 per il Santo Niente e pochi mesi fa per gli Scisma.

Sì, questa volta Marco ha deciso di abbandonare il territorio italico per alzare il tiro e puntare dritto in direzione Old England, coordinando un impegnativo tributo ai Pink Floyd. La risposta dei gruppi a questi progetti è sempre positiva: partecipare dà lustro, fa curriculum, e può mettere in evidenza caratteristiche che nelle produzioni autografe, magari, restano un po’ nell’ombra. Se poi il disco va bene, l’effetto trascinamento è assicurato per tutti coloro che vi hanno preso parte: con queste prospettive, perché non provarci?

Nell’organizzazione della tracce sul disco, si è deciso di lasciare ai due estremi i pezzi più lunghi, due monumenti come la seconda parte di “Echoes” (perfetta come incipit) e “Set The Control For The Heart Of The Sun”, coraggiosamente reinterpretate senza troppi timori reverenziali rispettivamente dai Ropsten e dai NUT.

Nel mezzo altri tredici episodi che mostrano un livello costantemente altissimo, con punte di assoluto pregio. Ho apprezzato a dismisura le belle rotondità espresse dagli A Violet Pine in “Embryo” (in tanti li ringrazieranno per aver dato lustro a questa perla nascosta) e l’aggressività dei Mondo Naif su “Have A Cigar” che ben si prestava a un tipo di approccio moderatamente “hard”.

Da applausi a scena aperta anche la “Pigs” di Sara Ardizzoni, con Giorgio Canali gradito ospite, il passo magistrale dei DUNE su “Astronomy Domine”, e certi ripescaggi assai poco scontati, che rendono questa compilation un oggetto di studio.

Oltre agli artisti già citati, troviamo belle performance di Desert Wizards (“Childhood’s End”), Ka Mate Ka Ora (“If”), OfeliaDorme (“Bike”), Furious George (“Grantchester Meadows”), Unmade Bed (“Crying Song”), Senzafissa Dimoira (“Remember A Day”), Dani Male & The Dead (“Jugband Blues”), Fabio Zuffanti (“Julia Dream”), The Child Of A Creek (“Breathe”).

Non c’è nessuno che rispolvera gli hit, non ci sono scorie di “Another Brick In The Wall” o “Money”, bensì una ricerca del (relativamente) misconosciuto, che porta in superficie capolavori che per molti suoneranno come preziose novità, almeno per le giovani generazioni.

La bilancia pende in maniera decisa sul primo periodo della band britannica, quello più fortemente psichedelico, con due estratti dal fondamentale esordio del 1967 “The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn” e ben tre dal successivo “A Saucerful Of Secrets”.

Si passano al setaccio “More”, “Obscured By Clouds” e “Meddle”, non certo i dischi più popolari dei Pink Floyd, i must “Ummagumma” e “Atom Hear Mother”, e addirittura una b-side (“Julia Dream”, che poi finì nella compilation “Relics”) e la già citata “Embryo”, mai edita dal gruppo, ma suonata spesso dal vivo in una forma molto più diluita rispetto a quella qui riportata.

Un solo estratto dai bestseller “The Dark Side Of The Moon” e “Wish You Were Here”, completamente ignorati “The Wall” (citato però nel titolo dalla raccolta) e i trascurabili successivi; il più recente estratto risulta pertanto essere “Pigs”, pubblicato sul sottovalutato “Animals” nel 1977.

Devo per forza trovare qualcosa che non va? Tutti bravi e meritevoli, in alcuni casi clamorosi, ma il difetto delle nuove generazioni (ne abbiamo già parlato diffusamente in altre occasioni) è che osano poco. C’è sempre troppo rispetto nei confronti degli originali e tale atteggiamento impedisce ad un progetto di questo tipo di diventare esemplare, di assumere le vesti di un prototipo da seguire e perpetrare nel tempo, castrandosi la possibilità di restare nella memoria in eterno invece che vivere di luce riflessa.

Si può comprendere che uscire dagli schemi in casi come questi può spaventare, ma è pur vero che l’imponente discografia pinkfloydiana contiene evidenti germi opportunamente contaminabili da tanti sapori, solo apparentemente estranei alle primordiali idee di Waters e soci. Se le quindici band intervenute avessero osato mischiare le carte con altri aromi, aggiungendo asprezze noise, deragliamenti dubstep, divagazioni shoegaze e, perché no, anche manovre indie o derive world, riarrangiando le idee dei Pink col gusto personale, allora sì che questo tributo sarebbe divenuto una pietra miliare, e non soltanto una pur felicissima parentesi troppo ossequiosa.

Personalmente avrei preferito restare sorpreso, faticare a riconoscere le canzoni, assistere a vere trasmutazioni degli originali, forse anche Syd da lassù avrebbero finalmente sorriso di più, rispetto all’ipotesi di ascoltare (salvo alcuni sprazzi particolarmente coraggiosi, e per questo apprezzabili) un lavoro da impeccabili cover band. Detto questo, “One Of My Turns” contiene comunque canzoni eccellenti, ottimamente suonate, arrangiate con precisione maniacale, seguendo un criterio di scelta apprezzabile e condivisibile.

Certo che è difficile far male quando il materiale di partenza è di così altissimo livello, ma qui ci sono quindici realtà di casa nostra davvero capaci, con una dinamica dei  suoni, una perizia tecnica, una cura nelle registrazioni, che vien da chiedersi come possa trattarsi di nomi ancora più o meno oscuri a troppi.

Questo è un tributo importante, che costituisce una bella vetrina per il presente, ma allo stesso tempo si pone l’ambizioso obiettivo di diventare un lasciapassare per la gloria.
