California… here we coooome! Sole, spiagge, surf, bionde in bikini, Baywatch, Los Angeles, Hollywood, locali per vip? Può essere, ma non solo. E di sicuro non nel monolite oggetto di discussione: per fortuna natura, vocazione o semplice eccesso di inquinamento atmosferico ci regalano, anche in un tale apparente paradiso, pazzi furiosi, repressi senza speranza e scombinati cronici.

La copertina dovrebbe fornire subito qualche indicazione, nera, con il solo titolo in grigio. Lo stesso formato non è roba da tutti i giorni: dieci Lp, venti artisti, un lato ciascuno per un totale di cinque ore e mezza, mille copie stampate. E sapendo che si tratta di una digressione sul noise locale si può facilmente immaginare che non sarà una passeggiata di salute.

L’inizio tutto sommato non è eccessivamente drastico: “Monde Brutal” di Damion Romero vive su una cupa onda sinusoidale e l’ottimo pezzo di Colley gioca su feedback scheletrici e acutissimi; tuttavia la storia inizia a farsi pesante con Gerrit per sfociare poi nella violenza inconsulta di R.H.Y. Yau. “Point Of Seperation” è probabilmente il pezzo più malsano del lotto: dopo qualche momento di silenzio partono delle stangate elettroniche e delle urla belluine, cui seguono alcuni minuti di rumore bianco e di nuovo quel latrato di bestia in gabbia, quindi il silenzio, silenzio interrotto da rumori di fluidi gocciolanti, sputi, conati di vomito e chissà cos’altro, per niente piacevole, ma pur sempre un’esperienza. Si ritorna su terreni meno malati grazie al nebuloso drone dai contorni slabbrati di Sixes, uno dei vertici del lotto, e con i power-electronics di Control, il primo lato harsh-noise vero e proprio della raccolta.

Ma California non raccoglie soltanto nuove leve, i Solid Eye sono nientemeno che la band di Rick Potts, uno dei padri di quella indimenticabile avventura che fu la Los Angeles Free Music Society: il lato loro dedicato si rivela più vicino a certe visioni freak-folk scandinave che al rumore scandagliato nel box. Parlando di nuove leve capitano a fagiolo gli Skaters, astruso duo autore di svariati cd-r basati su un folle scontro in no-fi di modulazioni vocali che richiamano i monaci tibetani e strumentazione (spazzatura?) analogica da 5 dollari al chilo. “Wind Drapeing Incense” si candida facilmente come il loro parto migliore, voci da rituale druidico, stacco con giro melodico, altri ululati e campionamento finale di un coretto preso chissà dove e passato attraverso un citofono. Rotto ovviamente.

Moth Drakula, The Cherry Point e John Wiese calcano pesantemente la mano sul free-noise , un misto di Whitehouse, Wolf Eyes, Masonna, Merzbow più certe cose del cofanetto “Improvised Music From Japan”. A questa allegra combriccola si aggregano gli Oscillating Innards, GX Jupitter-Larsen, Xome e Tralphaz. È il lato più noise di una raccolta noise ed è attraverso questi solchi che verrà testata la capacità di sopportazione dell’ascoltatore e la sua, oramai da rottamare, sanità mentale.

Le sorprese, però, non sono affatto finite. La più bella è quella che ci riservano gli Yellow Swans, duo solitamente alle prese con materiali vicini a certo hardcore digitale con venature industrial: qui gli elementi restano gli stessi, spinti però al parossismo, quindici minuti di puro rumore, di pura follia. In questo assalto all’arma bianca l’unica cosa saggia da fare è arrendersi e alzare il volume. Di contrasto, gli Open City propongono un pezzo realmente suonato, insinuando, su una batteria free in stile Supersilent, spastiche sferzate chitarristiche. Un brano enigmatico e parecchio interessante.

Restano da citare gli Amps For Christ, autori di un pezzo piuttosto ragionato, diviso in quattro sezioni che divagano tra un balletto meccanico, una ballata per flauto, chitarra acustica e sitar, una parte recitata e infine un drone acquatico accompagnato da un violino malinconico.

Fare un bilancio, dare un giudizio complessivo è compito estremamente difficile: senza troppi giri di parole, non è musica per tutti e per giunta trattasi, visto il formato e la durata, di lavoro rivolto ai cultori. Il senso di una simile opera, infatti, non è solamente di raffigurare una scena musicale, è sostanzialmente la registrazione e l’archiviazione del sound del gruppo coinvolto. Sì, il solo sound , perché per molti artisti qui contenuti parlare di album o, ancora peggio, di singoli brani, non avrebbe molto senso: le rispettive proposte musicali, infatti, vengono solitamente diluite in decine di uscite, di norma cd-r in tiratura estremamente limitata e rendendo spesso difficile o, in certi casi, superfluo scegliere tra uno e l’altro. Provate a perdervi nel catalogo Skaters oppure Yellow Swans o fate un passo più in là ed esplorate l’universo Wolf Eyes, con etichette annesse.

In prospettiva, l’importanza storica c’è tutta. Che sia proprio questo il testamento da lasciare ai posteri, la raccolta che bilancia la frammentarietà discografica e che si propone come indispensabile acquisto? Difficile dirlo, ma nel frattempo sono in lavorazione altri monumenti al noise di altrettante differenti realtà, tra cui Michigan, New York, Portland e Texas.
