After the more or less famous covers and pairings of bands more or less "physiologically linked" to each other, "Loser, my religion" celebrates its third birthday with a compilation kicked off by eleven Loser listeners (out of more than a hundred sample creators) who sent in their samplers. Twenty-six bands took these tracks as a starting point and built songs that differ wildly in genre, attitude and approach. Just one thing they all share: the independent badge that each act represents, albeit in its own way.
Simple, obvious stuff: more than ten thousand people downloaded the second volume, and early word suggests the numbers for the new compilation could go even higher. We say... simple and obvious, because such huge interest shouldn't surprise anyone. Loser's growth as a web radio is directly proportional to the rising value of the collection, with an overwhelming wealth of genuinely top-notch acts. Take Yuppie Flu, drifting ever further into Grandaddy territory (though these days it's arguably Grandaddy who've strayed from yuppie territory...), relentlessly showcasing their talent, just as Midwest have no qualms about handing us one more of their gems of sweet melancholy.
Also excellent are Tiger Wood, steeped in Americana (and "garden-variety" DNA), the usual Zu busy with their usual madness, and Candies with their grimy indie rock. A notch below, but still well above par, are the curious Joe Leaman, close to some strange notion of country, the pseudo-pop of Slumber, and the "Tucson-via" Mosquitos, while special mention (though frankly, by now, not terribly original) goes to Perturbazione: "The Sample & The Loser (Il campione ed il perdente)" is a genuine gem, lit up by their trademark polish and made even more dazzling by electronic forays that are quite foreign to the Piedmontese group's usual genes.
Obviously, out of twenty-six tracks you'll find some more to your taste than others, you'll hit the odd dull moment and the odd pleasant surprise, but one thing's for certain: the word disappointment won't come anywhere near you during the nearly hundred and twenty minutes of "Loser, My Religion #3". Quality, straight from the web.
