Populista è una serie di pubblicazioni discografiche curata da Michał Libera per l’eccentrica etichetta Bôłt Records (distribuita da Monotype): un marchio di autentica sperimentazione che, a fianco di mostri sacri del nostro tempo come John Tilbury e i collettivi MIMEO e zeitkratzer, ha ospitato moltissimi artisti emergenti della scena polacca, terreno fertile di esperienze distintive e innovative in seguito alla caduta del regime comunista. Una creatività assieme impetuosa e riflessiva, che non di rado passa dalla memoria storica alla luce della libertà espressiva oggi concessa alle arti.

L’intuizione di Libera viene così rivolta al “Winterreise”, corposo ciclo liederistico di Franz Schubert: un’opera di riferimento nel repertorio per voce e pianoforte per la quale, però, sarebbe stato impossibile superare indenne la prova del tempo, calata com’è nei sentimenti e nella weltanschauung della scuola viennese dell’Ottocento. A maggior ragione, dunque, non vi è modo di affrontarla con leggerezza e inventiva senza prima conoscerla a fondo, studiarla e viverla nell’interpretazione classica. Solo da queste basi può svilupparsi un concept così mirato, un trittico che diventi vero e proprio saggio di rilettura del passato in chiave contemporanea.

E difatti, pur rispettando il totale dei ventiquattro brani, quello del duo formato per l’occasione dalla cantante Barbara Kinga Majewska e della pianista Emilia Sitarz è uno sfrontato divertissement a tutto campo, principiante nel buio della più radicale non-music – percuotendo a ritmo serie di tasti le cui corde sono state ammutolite – poi ripresa in diversa guisa nell’esercizio d’omissione di “Letzte Hoffnung”, in pratica un pentagramma del cui originale rimangono solo minuscole tracce.

Anche nel mezzo di un episodio fedele e accorato il cantato della Majewska si interrompe inaspettatamente in una risata soppressa, lasciando seguitare il pianoforte; quest’ultimo traduce la carta in maniera indefessa, a volte con evidente frenesia per timore di venir surclassato dalla controparte (anti)lirica, che tra recitati senza trasporto emotivo prima, poi sguaiati e deliberati maltrattamenti degni delle sorellastre di Cenerentola (“Der Lindenbaum”, “Im Dorfe”) attraversa l’intera scala valoriale che principiando con la replica fedele sfocia nella parodia.

I momenti più estroversi trovano il loro contraltare nella breve quiete solista di “Der greise Kopf” (per sola voce) e in “Wasserflut”, scenario lagunare senza movimento percettibile. Il confortante valzerino “Die Krahe” prelude al Satie più romantico, che sembra riapparire per soli quattordici secondi nel frammento “Fruhlingstraum”: continua così il gioco di sottrazione al contesto originario, una bellezza esacerbata che fa solo rare concessioni al fascino intonso del romanticismo schubertiano (pazientate sino al commosso terzetto da 21 a 23). Difatti il viatico che conduce al termine di questo primo capitolo si manifesta nell’ottusa ripetizione di un accordo dissonante per oltre dieci minuti, di nuovo in assoluto sfregio alla ricchezza armonica del maestro ottocentesco.

L’unico protagonista del secondo cd non ha bisogno di presentazioni nella cerchia sperimentale: la sconfinata produzione dell’inglese Richard Youngs si è sempre concentrata sull’utilizzo di strumenti inusuali per esplorare un concetto del tutto personale di musica folk, dipanato in un percorso che attraversa i cataloghi di importanti label quali Jagjaguwar, Ba Da Bing! e Fourth Dimension Records.

Il suo “Parallel Winter” ha la forma di un lungo poema mantrico per voce, chitarra e zither, sostenuto quasi soltanto da un singolo arpeggio e tre tonalità cicliche, alternate tra i versi sciolti e irregolari ove ritorna sempre l’invocazione “O Winter”.

Un’abbondante mezz’ora che ci riporta alla ritrovata fascinazione freak degli anni Zero, all’insegna di un ritualismo meditativo che nella ripetizione va allontanandosi man mano dallo stato cosciente, come un respiro che attraversa le cavità del corpo per andare ad abitare nella natura silenziosa dei boschi invernali.

Come procedesse per fasi di progressiva riduzione – sia nella strumentazione che nell’ornamento stilistico – il trittico si completa nella solitudine canora di Joanna Halszka Sokołowska. Un concerto senza pubblico, come una testarda sessione di prova per raggiungere l’interpretazione impeccabile. La scarsa risonanza dello spazio non inganna l’orecchio: ogni tono è avvertito per quello che è realmente, e nulla ha subìto alterazioni da alcuna forma di editing in studio.

L’intera performance si basa sull’ultimo lied del ciclo, “Der Leiermann” (Il suonatore di organetto): la scelta artistica, tutt’altro che casuale, è quella di cantare senza accompagnamento un brano che parla di una malinconica solitudine, e protrarlo per un’ora e un quarto come a volerlo incarnare, mettendosi nei panni di un suonatore di strada che si esibisce nell’indifferenza generale:

A piedi scalzi sul ghiaccio

Barcolla avanti e indietro

E il suo piattino

È sempre vuoto.

Nessuno sta a sentirlo

Nessuno se ne accorge

E i cani ringhiano

Attorno al vecchio.

E lui lascia che sia

Così com’è

Lui suona, e il suo organetto

Mai si ferma.

Aumentare le pause tra le parole, ripetere una strofa, un verso o appena una sillaba per dieci, venti, trenta volte fino a intonarla in maniera pura e perfetta. Una prova dal fascino irreale, davvero romantica, magari persino folle ma intimamente “lirica”.

Con questa limpidezza va a chiudersi il cerchio di “Winterreise”: uno dei tanti possibili, senza nemmeno il desiderio di lasciare una traccia visibile in qualsivoglia discorso sulla nuova musica. È semmai uno spunto, la scintilla che dovrebbe ispirare inedite pratiche di relazione con ciò che non ci pertiene direttamente, ma che possiamo tornare, anche solo per approssimazione, a rendere nostro.
