“Music And Migration” non è una semplice raccolta di brani firmati da artisti vari. La sua peculiarità risiede infatti non soltanto nella varietà dei nomi coinvolti e nella tematica sottesa alla sua creazione, ma soprattutto nell’atipicità della sua genesi e delle modalità secondo le quali è stata prodotta e viene distribuita. Si tratta infatti della seconda pubblicazione – ma prima ufficiale, visto che la precedente era stata un album a sottoscrizione di Textile Ranch – della nuova etichetta Second Language, ideata da Glen Johnson insieme a David Sheppard (metà del duo Phelan Sheppard) e al danese Martin Holm, e caratterizzata da assoluta autonomia artistica, produzioni limitatissime e peculiarità delle confezioni, tutte in materiale riciclato assemblato a mano.

 

La duplice passione di Martin Holm per la musica e per l’ornitologia e la sua sensibilità per la protezione dei volatili hanno costituito lo spunto decisivo per “Music And Migration”, compilation a tema dedicata al misterioso istinto migratorio e realizzata a supporto della campagna “Born To Travel” dell’organizzazione ambientalista BirdLife International.

“Musica per gli uccelli” potrebbe dunque ben definirsi quella delle ben ventuno tracce raccolte nella compilation e offerte in via esclusiva da altrettanti artisti, più o meno noti, operanti in ambiti tra loro piuttosto diversi. Così, ad esempio, accanto alle oblique trame bucoliche di Vashti Bunyan convivono i visionari drone di Leyland Kirby e Xela, mentre i cammei pop di Ant e Darren Hayman si alternano con disinvoltura alle piéce post-classiche di Library Tapes, e dei fratelli Heather e Peter Broderick. Che si tratti di nomi di richiamo oppure di band e artisti ancora tutti da scoprire, le sterili classificazioni di genere decadono ben presto a fronte dell’omogeneità complessiva del contenuto della raccolta, determinata non tanto dall’identità tematica quanto soprattutto dalle tante sfumature che scolorano tra brano e brano, evidenziando affinità stilistiche talora imprevedibili.

 

Un simile risultato è conseguito in parte grazie alla sapiente compilazione della tracklist, in parte in ragione della collocazione liminare di molti degli artisti che hanno dato il loro contributo rispetto agli ambiti di riferimento. Proprio per questo le differenze risultano molto spesso sfumate, dimostrando come attraverso strumenti acustici e tutt’al più un moderato utilizzo dell’elettronica si possano coniugare limpidezze bucoliche, esili torpori psichedelici ed evocative trance tra profondità ambientali e retaggi post-classici. Sembrerebbe quasi che molti degli artisti che hanno partecipato alla raccolta abbiano inteso gettare, più o meno consapevolmente, una sorta di ponte tra di loro, ragion per cui, ad esempio, l’ex-Hood Richard Adams (The Declining Winter) spoglia le sue melodie oblique di loop e samples elettronici per tradurle in sinuose trame da orchestrina folk, mentre persino poeti dronici quali Xela, Seasons (pre-din) e Fieldhead rideclinano il loro lessico spettrale in una varietà di modulazioni e suggestive increspature.

 

Benché il nucleo centrale della raccolta sia costituito da mutevoli interpretazioni strumentali di ambito “modern classical” (il “prepared piano” di Hauschka, l’arpa di Sheppard, il violoncello di Danny Norbury, il drone di violino di Peter Broderick e i pregevoli intrecci tra piano e archi di due valide novità quali Brave Timbers e Carousell), non mancano bozzetti di canzoni che oltre a confermare la sensibilità melodica dell’ottimo Ant e a restituire un Darren Hayman in ottima forma con un pezzo di synth-pop leggiadro e primaverile permettono di scoprire sognanti intrecci di delicato folk-pop lui-lei ad opera degli interessantissimi nuovi binomi Enderby’s Room e Winter Cabin.

 

Così, quando i sei minuti di magico fluttuare della “Whiffling” di Leyland Kirby giungono a calare il sipario su “Music And Migration”, resta netta la sensazione di trovarsi di fronte a una raccolta elaborata con grande cura, che proprio nell’estremo equilibrio con cui getta ponti tra sensibilità e modalità espressive diverse trova una ragion d’essere in grado di elevarla ad autentico punto di riferimento per quanti praticano o semplicemente amano sonorità collocate su quella linea di continuità concettuale e di mood che unisce timbriche acustiche, minimalismo elettronico e saggi cameristici.

Peculiare per forma e contenuto, “Music And Migration” regala un’ora e un quarto di viaggio sospeso a mezz’aria, guidato dalle correnti della musica e dall’istinto di artisti diretti verso mete sempre nuove e in continua mutazione.
