L’organizzazione internazionale Red Hot, fondata nel 1989 con l’esclusiva finalità di raccogliere fondi per la lotta alla diffusione dell’AIDS attraverso la cultura pop, ha espletato puntualmente la sua azione attraverso compilation musicali a cadenza annuale, che hanno spesso coinvolto artisti mondiali di prim’ordine. La prima raccolta, “Red Hot + Blue” resta forse tuttora la più conosciuta, anche grazie a una delle ultime splendide interpretazioni degli U2, che per l’occasione reinterpretavano il classico di Coal Porter “Night And Day”. A quella raccolta ne sono seguite tante altre, quasi sempre “a tema” e popolate da più di un nome di grido, fino a quest’ultima, per la quale sono state fatte decisamente le cose in grande, così da celebrare degnamente il ventennale dell’organizzazione.

Il risultato è l’imponente doppio cd intitolato “Dark Was The Night” che, edito dalla prestigiosa etichetta 4AD, promette di emulare i fasti della prima compilation, raccogliendo in oltre due ore di musica tanti degli artisti più validi e in vista del mondo latamente “indie”, che contribuiscono con pezzi inediti e collaborazioni talvolta ardite.

Sarebbe oltremodo lungo e ozioso snocciolare uno per uno i nomi dei tanti, importanti artisti coinvolti; tuttavia al di là dell’inevitabile richiamo da essi suscitato e non certo circoscritto al solo novero dei rispettivi fans, uno degli elementi di interesse è senz’altro costituito dal ritorno sulla scena di band e autori che da tempo fanno sentire la mancanza di loro produzioni originali, così come dai vari duetti e dall’emergere ufficiale di qualche progetto radicalmente nuovo.

Quest’ultimo è senza dubbio il caso di Riceboy Sleeps – nuova, affascinante creatura ambientale di Jónsi Birgisson e parallela a un progetto artistico di spettro più ampio rispetto a quello esclusivamente musicale – e della rivisitazione in puro stile Belle & Sebastian del traditional “Another Saturday”, firmata col proprio nome dal solo Stuart Murdoch.

Incuriosiscono invece duetti come quello iniziale tra Dirty Projectors e David Byrne e il successivo, che evidenzia le diverse sfumature acustiche di José González e dei Books alle prese con “Cello Song” di Nick Drake, così come quelli dei fratelli Dressner (The National, peraltro curatori dell’intera raccolta), che, oltre a collaborare con Nico Muhly, si presentano anche divisi e affiancati a Bon Iver e a quell’adorabile presenzialista di Antony Hegarty. Altrettanto singolare l’accostamento tra due declinazioni dell’indie-rock, diverse nel tempo e nello stile, nel brano collettivo che unisce Blonde Redhead e Devastations. Tra tutti, il meglio riuscito è sicuramente il duetto acustico tra Ben Gibbard e Feist, che conferma la già ottima propensione del primo per canzoni semplici e dallo spiccato senso melodico, qui impreziosita dall’interpretazione della seconda, ormai affermatasi con merito tra le più credibili voci femminili degli ultimi anni.

Tra gli altri brani, meritano una segnalazione quanto meno la splendida “The Giants Of Illinois”, rivista da Andrew Bird in una raffinata chiave orchestrale e le reinterpretazioni bluesy proposte da due stimate voci femminili, quali Cat Power, ormai adusa a cimentarsi nei suoni della tradizione, e My Brightest Diamond, qui intenta a rileggere niente meno che Nina Simone in “Feeling Good”.

Possono infine considerarsi gustose anteprime di album a venire i brani inediti di artisti del calibro di Grizzly Bear, Decemberists e Sufjan Stevens. Validi e indirizzati a diverse sfumature del lirismo folk quelli delle due band, per certi versi sorprendente quello del funambolico cantore dell'”Illinois“, che per l’occasione rompe il suo perdurante silenzio produttivo con un brano di oltre dieci minuti che chiude il primo cd, rappresentando una sorta di ibridazione tra le sue risalenti origini elettroniche e il più ampio respiro orchestrale e melodico degli ultimi lavori.

In definitiva, nessun brano davvero memorabile, ma tante proposte stimolanti, da parte di una vera e propria parata di stelle dell’attuale universo “indie”, che si fanno ascoltare con piacere nonostante l’ingente durata complessiva. E poi, come sempre, si tratta di una buona causa.
