Nella Premier League del rock psichedelico ininterrottamente dai primi anni 90, i Motorpsycho si sono aggiudicati diversi scudetti ed un paio di Champions League (almeno con “Blissard” e “Trust Us”). “Behind The Sun” è la candelina per il venticinquesimo compleanno, un traguardo che in pochi avrebbero osato augurare ai tempi dei gloriosi “Demon Box” e “Timothy’s Monster”, pubblicati mentre diversi profeti del grunge soccombevano sotto la scure dei propri fantasmi interiori. Ma Trondheim è terra per gente tosta, e la premiata ditta Ryan / Saether (assieme al confermatissimo batterista Kenneth Kapstad) continua a sfornare buonissimi dischi con rigorosa puntualità svizzera.

Dopo il riuscito esperimento di “Still Life With Eggplant” nella formazione tipo è nuovamente convocato il chitarrista svedese Reine Fiske (già con i Dungen). E come se non bastasse, la campagna acquisti porta in dote anche un nome caldo della scena scandinava, gli Sheriffs Of Nothingness (un Grammy norvegese vinto nel 2007 come Best Contemporary Music Album), vale a dire Ole Henrik Moe e Kari Ronnejlev, i quali aggiungono voluminose speziature di archi nei rigogliosi arrangiamenti del disco.

“Behind The Sun” è un album in perfetto equilibrio fra ferocia e dolcezza, fra orecchiabilità e spinte lisergiche, fra passaggi pastorali e amplificatori valvolari spinti a mille watt. Una sorta di summa del Motorpsycho sound, dove morbidose ballad immerse nel mellotron (“Ghost”, “Entropy”) si alternano ad episodi tipicamente garage-psych (“On A Plate”, “The Promise”, “The Magic & The Wonder”) ed allucinate cavalcate elettriche (la strumentale “Kvaestor”). I norvegesi lasciano da parte ogni inutile lungaggine kosmische per puntare dritti al sodo, e quando le tracce sforano i dieci minuti (ma stavolta accade soltanto con la mini suite in tre movimenti “Hell, Part 4-6”, prima suadente, poi simil- ambient, infine jammante), tutto scorre senza mai annoiare.

La presenza del chitarrista aggiunto Reine Friske consente di puntare molto sugli intrecci chitarristici elettro- acustici, dando spazio a molti momenti dolci, ma il finale è tutto per la deragliante “Hell, Part 7: Victim Of Rock” che chiude i giochi con sano vigore, riprendendo il tema del brano d’apertura del disco dello scorso anno (“Hell, Part 1-3”).

La copertina è bruttina, e non è una novità per loro, ma il contenuto di “Behind The Sun” conferma i Motorpsycho nella massima serie dei fuoriclasse dello psych- rock mondiale, e se non guadagnano un rating più alto è solo perché il confronto con i loro grandi masterpiece degli anni 90 gioca a sfavore.

Nonostante ciò, “Behind The Sun” non sfigura affatto al confronto con le migliori produzioni coeve di area psych, con buona pace dei vari (pur validissimi) Thee Oh Sees, Wooden Shjips e compagnia cantante. I norvegesi ci aggiungono a tratti delle robuste dosi di hard-rock, ed il gioco è fatto.
