MOTORPSYCHO - It’s A Love Cult

Con i norvegesi Motorpsycho vado a corrente alternata: per lunghi periodi non li seguo poi improvvisamente mi tornano in mente. L’ultimo che avevo comprato è “Roadworks vol 2”, quindi non avevo seguito l’ ultimissima produzione. Poi una stroncatura senza appello in una nota rivista che non stronca mai nessuno. Perché? Stimo talmente l’impostazione di tale rivista che subodoro il capolavoro e corro a comprare “It’s a love cult”.

Si parte con “Uberwagner or a Billion bubbles in my mind”, riff con chitarrona in primo piano (con refrain che mi ricorda un pezzo degli XTC, a voi scoprire quale), progressione “old fashion”, mellotron sullo sfondo, assolo di chitarra in pieno stile Seventies. Potrebbe essere un pezzo dei Led Zeppelin. Comincio a capire il perché di certe critiche. “Circle” è un bellissimo pezzo che parte con l’acustica, lento ed espressivo l’impianto melodico, bel giro armonico, finale in crescendo; La successiva “Neverland” è ancora più spudoratamente revanscista, con un impianto addirittura pre-progressive, un hammond che imperversa e un ritornello che non esce di testa. Si passa poi a “This Otherness”, più di sei minuti, sinuosa, lievemente psichedelica, in fortissimo debito con gli ai più sconosciuti talentuosi gruppi svedesi Landberk e Anekdoten.

 

Le nostre papille reazionarie cominciano a essere titillate ed ecco “Carousel”, sette minuti, chitarra acustica e archi in primo piano, bella melodia e finalone vergognosamente ispirato a “Kashmir” e alla parte finale di “Rain song”, entrambe del dirigibile. Il cd prosegue poi sulle stesse coordinate, con due bei pezzi di pop sovrarrangiato come “Serpentine” e “What if…”, siamo in piena zona Beatles con un forte retrogusto Canterbury-esque, una lentissima “The mirror and lie”, e sul finire “Cluster last stand”, tirata e decisamente più attuale come suoni, e “Composite head” con i Fab Four che potrebbero sporgere denuncia.

 

Si può dire tranquillamente che i Motorpsycho stanno facendo una battaglia di retroguardia, che “It’s a love cult” è un disco di taglia e incolla di varie influenze tutte poste ad almeno 25 anni dalla data di uscita, che è un disco poco coraggioso, citazionistico, a tratti al limite del plagio, incredibilmente derivativo. Ma nessuno a mio parere può dire che è un disco brutto, e questo è l’importante. O no ?
