Distillare 25 anni di attività in una retrospettiva che possa essere la più rappresentativa possibile: questa l’impresa che si pone “Supersonic Scientists”. Ma condensare il percorso dei Motorpsycho, districandosi fra decine album, un’infinità di Ep, collaborazioni e progetti incrociati, è un’operazione tutt’altro che agevole.

La scusa è fornita dalla pubblicazione di un libro biografico, pubblicato a metà ottobre in sole mille copie, per metà acquistabili sul web, e per l’altra metà presso la mostra dedicata al gruppo in quel di Trondheim. Il risultato è un doppio cd antologico, studiato per fungere da bignamino di uno fra i più autorevoli progetti mondiali del moderno psych-rock.

Mai come in questo caso le rinunce sono tante e dolorose, basti pensare alle drammatiche assenze delle fondamentali “S.T.G.” e “Kill Some Day”, in favore di brani meno indispensabili (cito “Cloudwalker” e “Cornucopia”), oppure di tracce decisamente prescindibili: “In Our Tree” non è certo il migliore estratto possibile da “Black Hole/ Blank Canvas”, “Toys” è un singolo riempitivo dello scorso anno, “Dominoes” (dal recente “The Motorpnakotic Fragments”) è robetta per maniaci iper-completisti.

Le discutibili scelte inficiano il rating complessivo, che avrebbe potuto attestarsi su standard ben più elevati, direi i massimi possibili, ma è pur sempre un gran bell’ascoltare, fra una “Vortex Surfer” che non smette mai di stupire, una “Starmelt/ Lovelight” dal passo bruciante, una “The Golden Core” ipnoticamente psichedelica, una “The Nerve Tattoo” brillantissimo esempio di alt-pop stellare, una “Psychonaut” che è materiale arrivato da un pianeta alieno, una “Little Lucid Moments” alla quale va data giustamente una seconda opportunità.

Si parte con il roccioso anthem “Nothing To Say” ripreso da “Demon Box”, il brano più anziano della raccolta, che per il resto cercherà di racchiudere tutte le fasi della carriera della formazione scandinava senza sentirsi in dovere di rispettare un ordine cronologico.

Il secondo dischetto è incentrato sul lato più “leggero” della band”, fra gli archi di “The Other Fool”, le reminescenze da Summer Of Love di “Going To California”, i languori di “The Afterglow” e “Serpentine”.

Bella la confezione, contenente un family tree formato poster pieno zeppo di informazioni, una sorta di mappa biografica tascabile che ricostruisce le diverse line-up succedutesi nel tempo.

Ma il sapore è quello dell’occasione sprecata: per avvicinarsi al caleidoscopico universo di una delle più influenti band delle ultime tre decadi, resta consigliabile rifornirsi della pazzesca sequenza “Demon Box”/ “Timothy’s Monster”/ “Blissard”/ “Angels And Daemons At Play”/ “Trust Us”.

Il risultato di cinque anni irripetibili (dal 1993 al 1998) in grado di certificare l’immenso talento e l’enorme peso specifico del combo norvegese.
