I Motorpsycho sono diventati ormai una delle band più maledettamente nostalgiche che si possano sentire ai nostri giorni, un coacervo (o potremmo dire in questo caso un groviglio) di influenze tutte rigorosamente anni 60 e 70 che sono una vera festa per le orecchie di chi ama quei suoni di passaggio tra la fine della psichedelia, la nascita del progressive e lo sviluppo dei suoni sabbathiani. Se esistono due modi di vedere l’arte (ragionando come nel recente film di Lars von Trier, “La casa di Jack”) – uno che vuole disturbare o sconvolgere il fruitore e un altro che cerca invece la bellezza pura – allora i Motorpsycho stanno certamente dalla seconda parte. La loro musica non può più sconvolgere chi l’ascolta, è in certo senso prevedibile, ma sempre dannatamente bella e studiata nei minimi dettagli.

Quello che da anni colpisce maggiormente del trio norvegese è la straordinaria professionalità, con album certamente nostalgici e conservatori, ma dotati di una cura e di una precisione tali da renderli comunque attuali e carichi di vita. Dopo la mezza delusione di “The Tower”, il nuovo “The Crucible” è un ritorno a livelli decisamente superiori, con tre brani lunghi che sono veri manuali di storia del rock e che mostrano una spiccata predilezione per le sonorità dei King Crimson, in tutte le varie stagioni vissute dalla band di Fripp.

L’inizio di “Psychotzar” è palesemente Black Sabbath per poi viaggiare tra mondi progressivi alternati a tratti psichedelici e riff massicci. E’ il brano più breve ed energico. “Lux Aeterna” inizia come una ballata tra primi King Crimson e Yes, per poi caricare synth e fiati ed esplodere in una caotica parte strumentale con inseguimenti vertiginosi e cavalcate di assoli. Il vertice arriva nei venti minuti di “The Crucible”, monumentale suite tra il prog e la psichedelia dove stavolta i rimandi principali sono quelli dei King Crimson di “Larks’ Tongues In Aspic” (palese dal minuto 3.36) per trasformarsi negli Yes di “Close To The Edge” (dal minuto 4.10).

Ma indipendemente da queste citazioni che lasciano il tempo che trovano, il brano è uno dei più interessanti del genere finora ascoltati nel 2019, venti minuti senza tregua dove la nostalgia non è un triste ricordo ma diventa una grande festa.
