Considerati da molti anni un’autorità assoluta del louder psych-rock nord-europeo, i Motorpsycho – pur continuando a incidere album più che onesti – da tempo non riescono più a realizzare lavori in grado di ritagliarsi un posto d’onore all’interno di una discografia sterminata, nella quale i capolavori assoluti restano quelli prodotti negli the Nineties. Il principale pregio del trio norvegese – anche in questa fase matura – risiede nella capacità di dar vita ogni volta ad album (continuano a realizzarli con rigorosa cadenza annuale) aventi caratteristiche peculiari diverse e molto ben focalizzate.

Per “Yay!” i Motorpsycho ritornano ad abbracciare un mood più rilassato, per lunghi tratti strettamente imparentato con la scena folk inglese degli the Sixties, lasciando da parte i granitici riff di matrice scandinava. E lo fanno con proprietà di mezzi e la necessaria cura artigianale che tale materia richiede, stratificando le chitarre acustiche, armonizzando le melodie vocali e sostenendo la parte ritmica prevalentemente con l’utilizzo di percussioni poco invadenti. Le iniziali “Cold & Bored” e “Sentinels” dipingono subito uno scenario dai tratti floreali e cristallini: le atmosfere sono rilassate, oniriche l’approccio è cantautorale, oserei dire Canterbury-esque, con piglio quasi esclusivamente unplugged, puntando una volta tanto su un minutaggio contenuto.

Ma l’eclettismo, che da sempre governa il percorso artistico di Bent (autore di tutte le tracce) e Snah, fa sì che lungo la direttrice psych-folk di “Yay!” si sviluppino delle benvenute discontinuità, come in occasione del pregevole uptempo “Patterns”, dove entrano – pur con la dovuta delicatezza – batteria e armamentario elettrico, e ancor più negli straordinari sette minuti di “Hotel Daedalus”, una delle migliori composizioni firmate dai Motorpsycho nell’ultimo decennio, in pratica la loro “Kashmir“, che si distingue dal resto del progetto per la magniloquenza dell’arrangiamento e per un imperioso assolo centrale. Tanto per non mollare l’approccio da guerrieri vichinghi psichedelici, mai domi.
