I Motorpsycho non sono nuovi a contaminarsi nelle acque del jazz, tra i pochi dischi che ho di loro ricordo a tal proposito “Roadworks Vol 2”, a testimonianza di un gruppo che unisce riferimenti palesi a una matrice musicale “seventy”, con un eccletismo e un’audacia di fondo che li salvano in qualche modo da critiche troppo feroci di passatismo. In tale contesto si inserisce questo disco con l’ensemble fiatistico degli Jaga Jazzist Horn,e i risultati sono eccellenti.

Si parte con i quasi 6 minuti di “Bombay Brassiére”, pezzo strumentale, tenue, evocativo, crepuscolare anche se in crescendo sorretto da un lento giro di basso su cui si staglia lirica la linea melodica della tromba e successivamente degli altri strumenti. C’è qualcosa di canterburiano nell’aria. “Pills, Powder And Passion Play” è un bel brano con una prima parte cantata che ricorda una ballatona da FM a stelle a strisce e un finale strumentale splendido che, complice anche una tromba su tracciati hasselliani, sembra un outtake da “Brilliant Trees” di David Sylvian.

“Doffen Ah Um” ci conquista subito: un piano in lontananza e acquatiche note di flauto, poi un improvviso stacco e partono tre minuti di grande jazz-rock fiatistico con coordinate più vicine alla scuola inglese (Nucleus, Westbrook) che statunitense. A confondere ancor di più le acque ci pensa la successiva “Theme De Yo Yo”, sette minuti torridi che mescolano soul, jazz e rock-blues con grandi stacchi fiatistici, un basso pulsante, assoli di sax, una chitarra lancinante. Il groove del pezzo è trascinante, a tratti volutamente grezzo e screziato di negritudine (e stiamo parlando di un gruppo norvegese), peccato per la voce non convincente…

E per gli eterni insoddisfatti dell’avant-garde? Niente paura, per loro ci sono i 20 e passa minuti della finale “Tristano”, lunga suite che unisce struttura e improvvisazione controllata: un lungo brano ipnotico, lunare, psichedelico, con dissonanze e ritmi etnici, derive spaziali e rumorismo di fondo, che richiamano certo psycho-prog di marca kraut , i Popol Vuh, i Pink Floyd, una certa attitudine free-jazz, con un finale in crescendo travolgente con il basso che spinge il brano come un treno in corsa. Tutto molto bello e i Motorpsycho si confermano un gruppo non solo bravo, ma anche curioso e interessante.
