I Motorpsycho sono ormai una leggenda del psych-rock. Prolifici e instancabili come sempre, tornano dopo la recente “Gullvåg Trilogy” con “Kingdom Of Oblivion”, nuova perla della loro sterminata discografia. Psichedelia, progressive, psych-folk e tracce doom continuano a intrecciarsi per creare sonorità costantemente interessanti, anche se certamente non nuove. Una ricetta inossidabile che fa mantenere livelli qualitativi davvero invidiabili.

“Kingdom Of Oblivion” nasce sulla scia del grandioso “The All Is One”, ripetendone forse gli stessi difetti (l’eccessiva lunghezza, settanta minuti), ma ricalcandone anche i pregi, pur senza raggiungere l’apoteosi della suite “N.O.X”. 

Nei dodici brani spiccano di sicuro i più lunghi, quelli che più si avvicinano all’idea di suite con variazioni di tempi e complessità crescente. La title track ne è un esempio, dal riff sabbathiano al susseguirsi più tipicamente prog con melodie azzeccate e afflati epici.

L’apoteosi si raggiunge però in “The Transmutation Of Cosmoctopus Lurker”, vertice di complessità, di tempi cangianti e aggressività prog-metal. Un hard-rock evoluto senza palesi rimandi a band particolari (a differenza di others) è presente nella notevole “The Waning”, divisa in due parti, e in “The United Debased” abbastanza vicina al sound dei Deep Purple.

Da segnalare anche “At Empire’s End”, brano sospeso tra prog e neo-prog (un po’ Yes, un po’ Porcupine Tree), in perfetto equilibrio tra le due influenze.

Per il resto tanti brani acustici brevi (tra questi il tipico psych-folk in stile Byrds “Lady May”) e una cover angosciante degli Hawkwind dallo storico Lp “Doremi Fasol Latido” (“The Watcher”, l’unico brano dell’album scritto da Lemmy Kilmister).
