MOTORPSYCHO - The Tower

Uno dei tipici album doppi ai Motorpsycho, nello stile di “Demon Box” (1993), “Timothy’s Monster” (1994), “Trust Us” (1998), mancava da un pezzo (i due volumi di “Here Be Monsters” 2016, gli vanno comunque vicino), da quel “Black Hole/Black Canvas” (2006) che – assieme al decimo volume di “In The Fishtank” (2003) con i Jaga – ha iniziato a tirarli fuori dalle sabbie mobili del pop flower-power per dirigerli nuovamente verso il formato della jam rocciosa.

Così, la lunga durata di “The Tower” può almeno far partire il trio di Trondheim, forte del nuovo Tomas Jarmyr alla batteria, particolarmente virtuosistico, sotto i migliori auspici. La traccia eponima vanta una buona jam incendiaria, instabile, e qualche minuto di ammennicoli prog-folk. “Bartok Of The Universe” è un boogie piacione che mischia il basso della “One Of These Days” dei Pink Floyd con le schitarrate dei Wishbone Ash. “A.S.F.E.”, fin troppo oleografica e comunque mancante di una progressione vertiginosa e del canto spiritato (e dell’organo di Jon Lord), replica con genuinità le chitarre rombanti e il battito supersonico della “Highway Star” dei Deep Purple. La psichedelia soft di George Harrison, in “Intrepid Explorer”, diventa raga-rock possente (anche se, di nuovo, senza direzione e forse anche senza vera tensione).

Da qui in poi, il fuoco qua e là rimane – ma è più mestiere – le già poche idee s’impastano. Si arriva banalmente alla ballad con “In Every Dream Home” (quasi inutile la progressione jazz-rock centrale) e “A Pacific Sonata”, persino quindici minuti, praticamente una cantata pastorale alla CSN&Y allungata a otto minuti, più una progressione sincopata che poco vi collima, pur velenosa ma senza vera sostanza, fino a sprofondare nell’autoindulgenza con i quattordici minuti di “Ship Of Fools”.

Preceduto da un’altra delle loro manie, la colonna sonora immaginaria (“Begynnelser”, 2017, irrilevante ma quantomeno più sperimentale), il disco vorrebbe essere il loro più definitivo, tentacolare, completo; finisce per essere la solita macchinona del tempo, ornata e accessoriata, che porta indietro: sia nella loro storia, per l’ennesima copia di sé stessi, che in quella altrui, ancora una volta ad anelare alle esperienze totali tra i 60 e i 70. Fino a “It’s A Love Cult” (2002) ci si era stancati della regressione a forma-canzone, con questo ci si stanca anche del formato-cavalcata (le due brevi e acustiche “The Maypole” e “Stardust”, per quanto cosette, sono boccate d’ossigeno). Disco conservatore, di schemi ripetuti a iosa, buono per il fan sfegatato, sfiancante per gli amanti più tiepidi.
