MOTORPSYCHO - Here Be Monsters

Si apre con un pianoforte il nuovo album dei Motorpsycho: il minuto scarso di “Sleepwalking” è un incipit inusuale per il trio norvegese che, per l’ennesima volta, si presenta al proprio pubblico con l’intento di escogitare evoluzioni stilistiche.

Tali evoluzioni passano da sempre attraverso la scelta di preziosi collaboratori, e stavolta, al posto delle chitarre del “membro aggiunto” Reine Fiske, troviamo il tastierista Thomas Henriksen, determinante nel rendere l’atmosfera generale elegante e impregnata di melodia, come subito evidenziato dalla pinkfloydiana “Lacuna/Sunrise”, sontuosa prestazione che entra di diritto fra le migliori della recente discografia della band.

Le tracce di “Here Be Monsters” sono state concepite per le celebrazioni del centenario di attività del Norwegian Technical Museum assieme a Stale Storlokken, musicista di estrazione jazz noto negli ambienti per le numerose collaborazioni; fra l’altro incrociò la strada con i Motorpsycho già in occasione di “The Death Defying Unicorn” nel 2012 e “En Konsert For Folk Fiest” nel 2015.

Ma al momento di registrare i pezzi è stato Henriksen a manovrare i synth, e la sua mano si sente nella strumentale “Running With Scissors”, il trait d’union fra il classico sound dei Motorpsycho e qualcosa che in un certo qual modo richiama strutture prog e (a tratti) fusion, territori di frontiera già esplorati, ma mai in maniera così vivida.

La più canonica “I.M.S.” (Inner Mounting Shame) è l’immancabile imperiosa cavalcata elettrica, mentre “Spin, Spin, Spin” è una brillante ballata psych-folk elettro-acustica, con tanto d’intreccio di voci flower power style, scritta originariamente nel 1968 dal cantautore di colore Terry Callier per il secondo lavoro degli H.P. Lovecraft.

“Big Black Dog” è la lunga traversata finale che si apre con sapori bucolici per poi slanciarsi verso i consueti scenari hard-psych, dove tornano ad emergere le mai sopite manie di gigantismo dei norvegesi, che troppo spesso si lasciano prendere la mano dal gusto per gli arrembaggi chilometrici.

Raffinato, ma non privo di decisi graffi elettrici, “Here Be Monsters” ci mostra una formazione sempre iper-attiva, alla costante ricerca di evoluzioni e contaminazioni, intenta di nuovo ad ampliare la propria varietà stilistica e mai chiusa onanisticamente in se stessa.

Appurata una certa fruibilità del risultato finale, ci aspetteremmo da queste tracce l’occasione di riuscire a piacere (finalmente) anche a coloro che non hanno mai digerito troppo i Motorpsycho. Una cosa che in realtà torniamo ad augurarci quasi ad ogni loro nuovo album, e alla fine forse non ci dispiace neppure così tanto che questi signori continuino a restare un ricco patrimonio di pochi, nonostante oltre venticinque anni di dischi memorabili.
