Lo strappo stilistico che Damien Jurado ha portato a termine nel 2010, con “Saint Bartlett”, ha in parte deluso chi l’aveva precocemente eletto come l’erede di Elliott Smith. Abbandonata l’estetica lo-fi, con la complicità e l’amicizia di Richard Swift, il musicista ha abbracciato una filosofia sonora più affine al biasimato cantautorato psichedelico dei tardi anni 70, piuttosto che alla stirpe neo-folk del nuovo millennio.

Ultimo atto di una trilogia mai pianificata, “Visions Of Us On The Land” ripropone la già nota alchimia tra meditazione ed epica, e ad essa aggiunge una panoramica stilistica intensa e variopinta, che sfiora definitivamente lo status di perfezione.

Non è un album che possa convincere le superflue analisi degli amanti della novità a tutti i costi, anche se resta difficile trovare un legame con i due precedenti capitoli della trilogia, ovvero “Maraqopa” e “Brothers And Sisters Of The Eternal Son”, che non sia quello puramente concettuale.

“Visions Of Us On The Land” è un album coinvolgente ed emotivamente complesso, un progetto che celebra l’estasi del viaggio, dell’amicizia e della vita on the road, mettendo insieme sogni e fantasie di quei moderni troubadour occitani, che da Linda Perhacs ai Cocteau Twins hanno tracciato un percorso poetico e musicale quasi eretico e dissonante, qui espresso magistralmente nell’apparente innocua trama lirica di “Prisms” o nella rabbiosa divagazione jazz di “Walrus”.

Chi aveva apprezzato alcune sfumature di Nick Drake nei suoi primi album non potrà mancare di notare le inflessioni alla John Martyn di “Solid Air” nella sublime ballata folk-soul-blues “Lon Bella”, anche se per la prima volta si affaccia in modo più netto l’ombra di Bob Dylan e della sua corte dei miracoli nell’intensa e solitaria “Orphans In The Key Of E” o nella ballata da folk-studio “Kola”.

L’atmosfera resta però prevalentemente visionaria, intrisa di quella flebile psichedelia esotica che è stata assorbita dalla musica americana attraverso il folk-pop di Harry Belafonte e José Feliciano, ed è da quelle suggestioni che Damien Jurado estrae i suoni tribali e le oscure trame da sabba della misteriosa “Mellow Blue Polka Dot”, nonché il pathos vocale che sottolinea il delizioso groove psichedelico di “Qachina.

“Visions Of Us On The Land” resta comunque un album di canzoni, aliene e prive di regole ma sempre canzoni, ed è quindi naturale che quello che si agita in sottofondo sia la forza primaria del rock‘n’roll, non è un caso che siano percepibili echi di Roy Orbison (la “Cinco De Tomorrow”, “A.m Am”) o Del Shannon (“Exit 353” e “November 20”) o che la dolcissima “And Lorraine” suoni come una cover version di una vecchia e dimenticata hit degli anni 50.

Elegante e sognante, lo zibaldone  musicale di Damien Jurado raggiunge la sua sublimazione artistica, con un album che più che suonare antico, suona privo di una dimensione temporale, una photo-story virata seppia dell’America di oggi, in una parola: timeless.
