BIITA HOUDEI - This Bed Was Made For Me

2026 (Basin Rock)
folk, singer-songwriter

Four albums released in the indie-folk circuit under the name Le'Ponds (“I Was Dancing With My Dream Team” in 2018, “Lean To” in 2019, “The Rattle” in 2022 and “In My Cave I Am Me” in 2023), and then the turning point: a collaboration with Haley Heynderickx and a first album under the name Biita Houdei (Biita means unique in Persian, and Houdei is the singer-songwriter's surname: her real name is Lisa).
“This Bed Was Made For Me” is an unexpected and enchanting encounter between a constant stream of ethereal, disorienting melodies and an apparently frail voice, whose whisper wins you over and captures you like the song of the sirens. Arm yourself with patience and poetry: the American singer-songwriter of Persian descent explores that border between reality and fantasy where the scent of the seasons is there to be savoured, where the unknown is a pleasant universe to discover.

This is genuine psych-folk, made of chords that aren't always clearly defined, of melancholy yet dreamlike melodies. Biita Houdei sings of the sadness felt while watching the fires burning the hills of Los Angeles, in the splendid “The Ground Here” featuring Buck Meek of Big Thief, and of the emotional paralysis of someone watching a world in perpetual decay in “Time Go Time Gone”, where a handclap does nothing to dampen its melancholy streak. With just a few sparse chords, the songwriter weaves a series of sumptuous harmonies: the instrumental track “Quiet And Warm Willed”, songs as brief as they are tender and touching (the elegant blend of vocal and instrumental harmonies on “Window In The Winter”), often dreamlike even as they're steeped in sadness (the impalpable “Fennel Knows”).
At times the compositions become almost incorporeal, like the ghost stories that animate the dreamlike “Night Fright”, where the sound of the banjo takes centre stage, while at other times they're disrupted by alien instrumental touches, like the voices and sax on “Burnin”.

“This Bed Was Made For Me” is a record stitched together with patience and craftsmanship, thirteen songs (originally fourteen) that, like the patches proudly on display in the cover art, weave a bond between the songwriter and the world around her. A place of the soul where culinary digressions and leaping frogs find refuge (“Frog Song”), a little gem of songwriting that rightfully earns a spot on the year-end playlist (“Life Inside The Hourglass”), reflections on friendship (“Adelaide”), and a closing lullaby (“Bud Worth Biting”) that ties together everything Biita Houdei has put into music and words.
I have no doubts: this bed was made for me.
