Una cosa va comunque riconosciuta a Damien Jurado: la sua carriera è sempre riuscita a esprimere un serio tentativo di ricerca artistica e spirituale continua, riflessa nelle vicende dei personaggi che fanno da protagonisti e da alter ego del cantautore americano nell’uno e nell’altro disco.

Come dice lo stesso Damien, “Brothers And Sisters Of The Eternal Sun” riprende la perdita dell’identità dello smemorato di “Maraqopa” e la traduce nella nuova parabola di un uomo che esce di casa per mai più ritornare, lasciando tutto, compreso il suo ormai vecchio sé stesso, per dedicarsi a una ricerca, alla ricerca.

Nell’impianto di racconto evangelico sperimentale, di liturgia avantgarde del disco, sfugge inevitabilmente a Jurado una vena Vernon-iana, espressa sia dai cori in falsetto nei brani più dolci (“Silver Katherine”), che dall’atmosfera da jam band anni Settanta dei pezzi più arrangiati (il jazz-folk vagamente etno-psichedelico, Junip-iano di “Silver Donna”, “Silver Timothy” e “Magic Number”).

Il risultato è un disco che sa intercettare con grazia istanze sia revivaliste (“Suns In Our Mind” potrebbe essere il proto-electro-pop che George Martin e gli America non hanno mai tentato) che più moderne, anche se solo ed esclusivamente dal punto di vista formale, con il tema religioso che diventa un espediente per giustificare l’asfissiante solennità del disco (la processione in tre quarti di “Jericho Road” su tutte).

“Brothers And Sisters Of The Eternal Sun” rimane così principalmente un esercizio estetico con cui appagare il pubblico alternativo più “classico”, che si accontenta di un aggiornamento (anche personale, sicuramente) di stili passati e di qualche passaggio più inconsueto – non stupirà vederlo apparire in qualche classifica di fine anno di “peso”.

Che poi questo disco abbia poco da raccontare e da esprimere diventa un problema secondario.
