Ci sono eventi che a volte obbligano tutti noi a volgere lo sguardo verso il passato, circostanze che costringono a tirare un bilancio della propria vita sia personale che artistica. Senza dubbio la morte dell’amico e collega Richard Swift ha avuto un ruolo nel processo di recupero di vecchie canzoni messe insieme da Damien Jurado per “In The Shape Of A Storm”. Lo conferma anche la scelta di lasciarle nude e crude, ingentilite dalla presenza di un secondo chitarrista, Josh Gordon, altresì catturate in sole due ore di registrazione nell’assolata California, che l’artista ha scelto come nuova residenza dopo aver lasciato la natia Seattle.

Raccolte in un arco di tempo abbastanza lungo, vent’anni, le dieci tracce del nuovo album di Damien Jurado non puntano alla compattezza tematica e stilistica, il musicista più che un racconto mette insieme piccole istantanee di un percorso emotivo, dove ottimismo e disillusione camminano di pari passi. E’ ben diverso “In The Shape Of A Storm” dalle precedenti incursioni nell’acustico del musicista, non c’è una progettualità ben precisa, la fragilità lirica di “Lincoln” non ha molto in comune con la complessa e sofferta “Silver Ball”,  e sono due differenti espressioni del romanticismo il valzer alla Leonard Cohen della title track e la tenera malinconia di “Throw Me Now Your Arms”.

Anche i testi sono caratterizzati da una semplicità e una leggerezza, che negli ultimi album era stata accantonata in favore di tematiche importanti e più spirituali. Damien Jurado sembra voler recuperare il piacere delle piccole cose, ed è questo il nodo emotivo di questa raccolta di canzoni, forse meno memorabili rispetto a quanto fatto in passato dal musicista americano, ma fondamentali per comprendere appieno l’evoluzione di uno dei cantautori più prolifici e geniali dell’ultimo ventennio.

Difficile capire cosa resterà di “In The Shape Of A Storm”, forse il recupero di quella lontana, e già citata, “Lincoln”, la malinconia contagiosa di “Newspaper Gown”, l’intensità racchiusa in un sol minuto nell’egregia “Weather”, o l’insolito ottimismo di “Anchors”. Quel che è certo è che ancora una volta Jurado è riuscito a dare un senso a un’opera discografica una prova di autenticità artistica che ne consolida il profilo e promette ancora buone vibrazioni per il futuro.
