La pubblicazione di un nuovo album di Damien Jurado è un rituale al quale ci si concede sempre con piacere. In quasi venticinque anni di carriera discografica, il musicista di Seattle ha raramente ceduto alla banalità e alla routine, regalandoci alcuni degli affreschi cantautorali più intensi e vividi. Nonostante tutto, il suo nome difficilmente compare nelle playlist di fine anno e nelle lunghe discussioni sui social; infatti, mentre Elliott Smith ha preso, meritatamente, il posto di Nick Drake nel cuore degli impavidi amanti del songwriting, Damien Jurado non è riuscito ad andare oltre uno status di cult musician, in questo molto più vicino al compianto John Prine, la cui grandezza è stata scoperta in notevole ritardo.

Senza dubbio l’aver perso tragicamente un amico e un collaboratore come Richard Swift ne ha cambiato non poco lo stile narrativo: la visionarietà di album come “Maraqopa” e “Brothers And Sisters Of The Eternal Son” è ormai un ricordo, Jurado ha rallentato il passo, lasciandosi catturare da una musicalità più semplice e per alcuni versi ordinaria. I suoi ultimi dischi sono affascinanti raccolte di straordinarie canzoni messe insieme in modo disordinato e meno organico che in passato. “What’s New, Tomboy?” consolida il recente passaggio alla Loose, sfumando in parte il tono minimalista delle ultime pubblicazioni, lasciando trasparire perfino un’attenzione a un pop dal vago sapore Beatles-esque nella ballata alla McCartney “Arthur Aware” e nell’estroverso folk-pop dalle tinte elettroniche “When You Were Few”.

Quel che non è cambiato è il timbro caldo e profondo della voce, il tono confidenziale e tormentato raggiunge non solo il cuore ma anche la mente, sia quando i tempi lirici sono più sostenuti, come avviene nell’avvincente “The End Of The Road” e nell’amabile “Birds Tricked Into The Trees”, sia quando Jurado accenna un briciolo di malinconia, nel delicato omaggio all’amico Richard Swift con “Ochoa” e nel cosmic blues alla Neil Young di “Francine”.

A dispetto di una meno strutturata messa in opera, “What’s New, Tomboy?” lascia il segno come qualsiasi altro album del cantautore americano, forte di canzoni di rara bellezza che troveranno asilo tra i fan di Nick Drake (“Fool Maria”, “Sandra”). Resta solo l’amaro in bocca per l’ennesima prova di talento destinata a restare all’ombra delle molte proposte alt-folk dal profilo mediatico e culturale più elevato, ma in parte destinate a incrementare il già cospicuo numero di false speranze per il futuro del rock. È chiaro a questo punto che Damien Jurado non avrà mai il ruolo del vate o del caposcuola, ma senza dubbio la sua produzione discografica resterà ancora per molti anni in uno stato di costante e appagante equilibrio creativo. Dietro la scelta del musicista di Seattle di tenere un profilo più basso c’è la consapevolezza che la poesia più autentica è fatta di piccole cose, quelle che l’artista riesce ancora a raccontarci con schiettezza e onestà.
