Come faranno mai i cantautori, in genere piuttosto prolifici, a tener viva l'ispirazione e la volontà di realizzare un album dopo l'altro, a fronte di caratteri stilistici e interiori più o meno costanti? La risposta è semplice, almeno quando si tratta di un artista come Damien Jurado – sempre capace di mettersi in discussione e di variare non poco i suoi registri espressivi – ed è riscontrabile nell'attitudine naturale alla narrazione e nello spirito autentico con cui vengono trasposti in musica moti dell'animo ora inquieti e sofferti, ora placidi e contemplativi.

All'alternanza dei sentimenti corrisponde, ovviamente, una conseguente eterogeneità espressiva, che in passato ha visto Jurado allontanarsi dal sicuro alveo dell'alt-country, delineando i contorni di uno stile personale, applicato tanto a classiche ballate elettriche quanto a un intimismo acustico permeato da una sottile malinconia. È così anche in questo "Caught In The Trees", ottavo album della serie, che mantiene la cadenza biennale del cantautore americano, facendo seguito a "And Now That I'm In Your Shadow", album che già segnava il suo ritorno a trame sonore più sfumate e prevalentemente acustiche, dopo il più ruvido "On My Way To Absence".

Eppure, "Caught In The Trees" si presenta, almeno nella sua parte iniziale, in maniera molto diretta e immediata, attestandosi su un registro di blues elettrico interpretato secondo il tocco lieve e con l'abituale, spiccato senso della melodia di Jurado. Scorrono via, così, ballate elettriche più facilmente assimilabili all'immaginario springsteeniano delle assolate highway americane che all'atmosfera solitaria e uggiosa della sua Seattle (“Gillian Was A Horse”, “Caskets”, “Go First”), le cui aderenze addirittura springsteen-iane sono tuttavia temperate dall'inconfondibile timbro malinconico, spesso delicatamente contrappuntato dalla voce femminile di Jenna Conrad, insieme a Eric Fisher ormai componente in pianta stabile della band di supporto, nonché coautrice di un paio di brani.

La fisionomia dell'album muta invece dopo il riflessivo interludio strumentale “Last Rights”, i cui romantici archi introducono la splendida “Last Rights”, senz'altro tra i brani meglio riusciti del lavoro, con la sua malinconia inestricabile ma aggraziata, tradotta in arrangiamenti suadenti e filtrata dalla pacata consapevolezza di un testo che narra di relazioni esaurite, suggellato dall'inevitabile constatazione "it's easy to land but harder to fall".

Anche i brani successivi si collocano su un mood analogo, presentando strutture incentrate su voce e chitarra, tuttavia piegate a diverse modulazioni espressive, ora di avvolgente lirismo (“Dimes”), ora di composto, accorato intimismo (“Everything Trying”, “Paper Kite”), conseguite attraverso una notevole versatilità compositiva e una varietà strumentale che, accanto agli archi, comprende anche l'organo e il pianoforte, a disegnare volute romantiche o enfatizzare adeguatamente la tensione delle canzoni.

Come sempre fedele al basso profilo e alla scarsa ostentazione del suo latente spleen, Damien Jurado ha confezionato un'altra opera matura, il cui valore principale risiede nell'autenticità di espressione, oltre che nella capacità di dosare con cura gli elementi della sua musica.

Timidamente e ancora nell'ombra (in coerenza col titolo dell'album precedente), il cantautore di Seattle sembra tornato, con questo "Caught In The Trees", in prossimità dei massimi livelli espressivi raggiunti con "The Ghost Of David", dopo aver abbandonato derive alt-country invasive e sostanzialmente sterili, in favore di una formula sonora più congeniale e dall'impronta ormai meritatamente riconoscibile.
