Da quando Damien Jurado ha scelto di pubblicare i suoi album in autonomia per la propria etichetta Maraqopa, qualcosa è cambiato nel rapporto tra il musicista di Seattle e un pubblico spesso assetato di rivoluzioni semantiche e concettuali.

Sembra quasi che il Jurado, dopo la morte dello stimato collega Richard Swift, abbia rinunciato ai riflettori mediatici, concentrandosi su progetti ancora più intimi e sfuggenti come “Sometimes You Hurt The Ones You Hate”.

Poliedrico e prolifico, Jurado sembra aver trovato quella serenità che di solito accompagna le sorti degli outsider o dei beautiful loser. Le malinconiche sfumature della recente produzione sono prive di quell’enfasi posticcia che a volte viaggia in parallelo con la mancata ispirazione.

Per quanto breve, “Sometimes You Hurt The Ones You Hate” è l’ennesimo attestato di creatività del musicista americano, che oltre a padroneggiare le potenzialità dei sempre interessanti e poetici testi, li addobba di sonorità lievemente cangianti che, pur non raggiungendo le più incisive tonalità di “Reggae Film Star”, sono perfette per quest’apparentemente discreta pubblicazione del musicista (stranamente esclusa dal catalogo di Spotify). 

La prima traccia dell’album, “James Hoskins”, mette in mostra una fisicità e una vitalità che contrastano con il resto dell’album, anche se dietro l’arrangiamento quasi psichedelico si cela l’ennesima composizione baciata dall’estro e dalla genuinità. La stessa esibita con empatico candore in “In A Way Probably Never” o nella splendida “A Buildings Kind Of Building”, una di quelle canzoni che nella sua aspra bellezza e poesia racchiude il senso di un album tanto breve (ventidue minuti circa) quanto intenso.

Arie barocche di rara eleganza (“Neiman Marcus”), suggestive citazioni di Nick Drake contornate da un delizioso accompagnamento corale (“A Lover, A Balcony Fire, An Empty Orchestra”) e ballate non prive di un’inattesa spensieratezza (“I Was A Line”) confermano Damien Jurado come uno dei punti fermi del moderno cantautorato made in Usa.
