“‘Maraqopa’ segna un nuovo inizio, una nuova era. Dove andrò? Non mi vedo tornare al vecchio sound.” Se lo merita senz’altro, Damien Jurado, da qualcuno definito il “padrino dell’esplosione folk di Seattle”, di diventare il Van Morrison del terzo millennio, uno dei cantautori carismatici, un punto di riferimento insomma.

Ma attenzione a non far diventare questa voglia di “classico” un rifugio nella calligrafia: l’unico tentativo, per così dire, di esotismo, è proprio il titolo del disco. Per il resto questa nuova collaborazione con Richard Swift (“Non mi vedo lavorare con nessun altro, in futuro” dichiara Jurado) conferma in sostanza quanto già mostrato in “Saint Bartlett“: suono pieno, ammiccante al folk-rock anni 70 e arrangiamenti ormai distanti anni luce dall’estetica lo-fi dei primi anni della carriera del Nostro.

Si parte subito con “Nothing Is The News”, nella quale questa tentazione calligrafica si fa sentire con maggior forza, traducendosi in una jam di elettrica e wurlitzer che si avvicina pericolosamente al “sottofondo” musicale. Per il resto del disco, invece, si riscopre per fortuna l’essenza della musica di Damien Jurado, qui resa ancora più rarefatta, quasi un’esalazione, un odore familiare appena percepibile, dagli arrangiamenti di tastiera (la younghiana “Everyone A Star”).

Dal puno di vista compositivo, il cantautore americano spara un po’ tutte le sue cartucce, un po’ chiamando in causa le ebbre, barcollanti melodie dell’amico di sempre David Bazan (“Mountains Still Asleep”), flirtando col pop nell’audace falsetto e nelle carezze sintetiche di “Museum Of Flight”.

Una poesia effimera quanto un po’ patinata, come un balletto in assenza di gravità, è una delle caratteristiche principali di “Maraqopa”, come nella title track, dalle parti di Van Morrison, la cui chitarra appena sfiorata torna nella bossa nova di “This Time Next Year”.

Insomma un vestito che non suona sempre azzeccato, intriso anche di sensazioni soul (si veda “Life Away From The Garden”, alla Fleetwood Mac), per lo stile tutto sommato viscerale di Jurado, che dà l’impressione di una repressione, di un’agitazione trattenuta, che andrebbe liberata per sopperire alla cronica mancanza di pezzi veramente incisivi. Quello che rimane, al momento, è un disco di cantautorato certamente superiore alla media, ma niente di più.
