Un fine settimana d’agosto del 2010, Richard Swift e Damien Jurado con un registratore a quattro piste e un microfono Coles 4038 registrano un pugno di canzoni altrui, piccoli e spontanei atti d’amore verso autori diversi e forse complementari. Da quell’intesa documentata su cassetta, nasce una collaborazione artistica che da “Saint Bartlett” a “Vision Of Us On The Land” ha dato ulteriori, preziosi frutti. Ed è in questo contesto che nasce un progetto nel quale Bill Fay e i Kraftwerk sono disposti in fila in un unico set musicale, che di lì a poco i due regaleranno al loro pubblico in free download.

Rimandata più volte e programmata in un primo momento per la fine del 2015, vede finalmente la luce la versione fisica di quelle registrazioni, da tempo non più disponibili in free download, ed è un vero piacere riascoltare quelle introverse e luminose cover version che consacrarono l’amicizia tra i due artisti.

Partendo da due prospettive diverse, il cantautore Damien Jurado e il vate del pop americano Richard Swift agguantano l’essenza delle nove canzoni, alterandone i contorni ma non il fascino.

Semplicità e sperimentazione caratterizzano le registrazioni, come nella enigmatica “Be Not So Fearful”, catturata dal microfono posto in una stanza intermedia tra il soggiorno, dove Damien suona la chitarra e canta, e la cucina, dove Richard percuote la batteria, ottenendo come risultato un suono plumbeo e misterioso.

Non oso immaginare cosa sia successo durante l’esecuzione di “Follow Me”, un brano di John Denver, qui spogliato della sua connotazione terrena e sublimato a canto angelico e quasi onirico.

Accade spesso che le versioni suonino anche meglio delle originali: è il caso di “Sincere Replies”, un brano tratto da un musical, e della splendida ballata “Hello Sunshine”, recuperata dal repertorio dei Relatively Clean Rivers.

Sono di Damien Jurado le due proposte più curiose e bizzarre, ovvero “Sweetness” degli Yes e “Radioactivity” dei Kraftwerk, entrambe private delle loro connotazioni stilistiche più peculiari e rilette con il candore e la dedizione di chi ne ammira la perfezione lirica e l’intrinseca bellezza.

“Other People’s Song” è un album intenso, forte, energico, più simile a una jam-session che a un album di cover. Non è difficile scorgere anche le difficoltà affrontate da Damien Jurado e Richard Swift nel modellare materia musicale a volte così diversa o lontana dalle loro attitudini: basti ascoltare la raffinata rilettura di “If The Sun Stops Shining” di Chubby Checker per comprendere il valore artistico di questo estremo esempio di album low-fi (ascoltare per credere l’insistente fruscio su “Outside The Winwond”).
