Dopo aver riletto il pioniere Goldie in occasione del Record Store Day, la punta di diamante della Hyperdub conferma il suo ritrovato attivismo e si ripresenta alla sua maniera, sganciando a sorpresa il presente Ep da due tracce, intitolato “Subtemple”. Come da consuetudine, anche in questa nuova produzione il musicista londinese punta tutto sulla sostanza, senza badare minimamente alla propria “immagine”, così come a cover ammiccanti e altre diavolerie con fini meramente promozionali. Il suo intento è semplicemente diffondere la propria musica. E, a conti fatti, Bevan continua a rimanere nell’ombra, “fregandosene altamente” delle varie prassi.

A ogni modo, in queste due tracce “spunta fuori” il Burial più desolato. Il misterioso producer della scuderia di Kode9 non fa sconti nemmeno a se stesso. Visti i risultati, il suo stato d’animo di recente deve aver subito un annientamento, qualche colpo profondo. Ovviamente è un’ipotesi, perché nulla trapela all’esterno sul suo conto. Sia l’introduttiva title track, sia la successiva “Beachfires” alimentano un disagio fortissimo, e mettono in luce un climax tanto tetro, quanto estremamente melanconico. È ben presente quindi un continuo “defilarsi dal mondo” messo in scena con la solita ricetta.

Si susseguono una dietro l’altra voci a intermittenza, frattaglie da cinema horror, rumori urbani, conversazioni prese da qualche angolo remoto della sua Londra, e suoni talvolta impossibili da decifrare. In questo schema depressivo, il cui orientamento sonoro giunge a destinazione solo a tratti, spuntano qui e là un orologio a tic tac e poche note al piano che fungono da metronomo e da “melodia” all’insieme. Un insieme comunque nerissimo, da cui traspaiono per l’ennesima volta un immane distacco e la proiezione di un isolamento talvolta eccessiva.
