William Bevan torna con un nuovo Ep, mentre l’arrivo del terzo album continua a essere una sorta di tabù. Il manipolatore più misterioso e osannato del dubstep, dopo aver collaborato con l’amico Zomby nel singolo a quattro mani “Sweetz” presente in “Ultra”, ha ben pensato di tornare in pista alla sua maniera, attraverso due tracce lanciate in modalità Batman, la cui ufficializzazione è stata condita da una serie di strani episodi: dal secret listening iniziale spacciato da discogs, passando per una prima smentita ufficiale e la successiva conferma definitiva da parte della stessa Hyperdub.

Il producer londinese mette ancora una volta in bella mostra l’amore per pellicole del calibro di “Alien” (i dialoghi estratti qua e là), e il legame indissolubile con le decadenti atmosfere post-rave; un nichilismo che si traduce spesso in soluzioni tese a mettere in pace anima e corpo. Il giovane Will capace di stordire mediante i fatidici wobble bass, le improvvise sterzate 2-step e bordate talmente potenti da far venire giù le pareti è ormai un ricordo decisamente lontano.

La pioggia che cade imperterrita alimenta nuovamente il disagio, e spuntano parole di amore e speranza come “I will always be there for you”, intonate alla solita maniera, e poste da contraltare all’umore cupo e melanconico, tra campionamenti inaspettati di Keni Burke, del compositore giapponese Koji Kondo, e battiti cadenzati alla stregua degli amici Massive Attack (“Young Death”).

Nella seconda metà del piatto, invece, Will “gioca” con la melodia della magnifica “Return To The Origin” di Mike Oldfield, e si diverte a campionare la colonna sonora del videogame “Last Ninja 2: Back With A Vengeance” curata da Matt Grey nel 1988; il tutto tra i consueti stop&go alienati, le intramontabili atmosfere oscure e tenebrose, e l’amore spassionato per l’elettronica casereccia e pulsante in scia vagamente hardcore dei tardi Eighties.

Con “Young Death/Nightmarket” Burial pone in evidenza tutto il suo charme da nerd pacato, solitario e sfuggente, contrapponendosi alla frenesia ritmica palesata nel magnifico singolo “Temple Sleeper” pubblicato lo scorso anno per la benemerita Keysound Recordings. Del resto, è letteralmente impossibile stargli dietro. Quindi non resta che incrociare le dita con la speranza di ritrovarlo quanto prima, e magari con più colpi in canna.
