Il 2017 verrà ricordato come uno degli anni più intensi per William Bevan, il quale dopo aver scosso un po’ tutti con il desolatissimo Ep da due tracce “Subtemple“, lasciando trasparire ancora una volta l’immane disagio che lo contraddistingue mediante momenti di pura ambient dai vaghi risvolti dub, contornata a più riprese da un climax perfetto per qualche cupa pellicola muta in bianco e nero, ha finalmente deciso di abbandonare per un attimo la propria trascinante melanconia, regalandoci qualcosa di estremamente diverso.

“Rodent” segnala dunque una totale divergenza dal mood oscuro e alienato delle due tracce sganciate nella prima metà dell’anno, e mette in bella mostra un approccio totalmente votato a certa deep-house. A tratti sembra di ascoltare il Larry Heard (!) più deep dei Novanta. Burial riempie l’atmosfera con i suoi classici e reiterati inserti vocali dal vago piglio soul e salta fuori finanche un sax a intermittenza. Uno smacco per tutti coloro che dopo i fasti del precedente Ep avevano già sentenziato la fine dell’imprevedibilità del Nostro e del suo amore per la cassa dritta in quattro quarti.

Ma non è tutto. A spiazzare ancor di più, è la successiva rivisitazione della medesima traccia ad opera di sua maestà Kode9, il quale stravolge letteralmente l’impasto con una stropicciatura personalissima a base di ritmi jangle, improvvise sterzate cibernetiche al synth e cambi di direzione epocali e da capogiro che negli ultimi due minuti lanciano letteralmente in orbita quanto creato in origine da Burial.

Un remix capolavoro in stile footwork che definire il migliore dell’anno è un eufemismo. E un Ep che sorprende e che finalmente rigenera.
