Il progetto Burial nasce dall’esaltazione delle influenze industriali presenti nel Dubstep: un groviglio meccanico di percussioni elettriche, distorsioni techno e sterzate deep garage. I suoi spazi sono interamente occupati da ammassi di ruggine dub, ripetutamente spostati dal soffio dei woofer e dai suoni rocciosi dell’incessante basso elettronico; tutto è reso vita senza sfruttare a pieno la polifonia dei sintetizzatori, come si è soliti fare ultimamente dalle parti di Londra, precisamente negli avamposti operai, la stessa zona da cui nasce il monologo notturno della prima anonima traccia, seguito dall’estenuante vintage-dub di “Distant Lights”.

Tutto sembra rimandare ai primi Massive Attack, ma è solo un’illusione, un miraggio che trova il riflesso sbagliato nei bassifondi di “Spaceape”, vere e proprie lagune metalliche, cariche di asfissianti pulsazioni. In “Wounder” il metronomo elettrico sconnette il ritmo inferto dal basso nevralgico, mentre “Prayer” fornisce la naturale definizione di Dubstep, senza l’urgenza di aprire un vocabolario; le sue metamorfosi broken beat sono l’espressione diretta delle prime tentazioni avant-dub.

Nell’opera trovano spazio anche svariati passaggi malinconici, collocati in “Forgive” e “Night Bus”, veri e propri pianti acidi in perfetto stile Eno. “Southern Comfort” ci riconduce nei vecchi rave da impianti dimessi, le sue sotterranee pulsazioni dub preannunciano il capolavoro dello scultore segreto, prima che il velo cominci la naturale discesa. L’unica fuoriuscita dal sottosuolo avviene in “Gutted” che, con suoi timidi accenni soul, potrebbe (paradossalmente) tuffarsi in modaioli long drink (pre)serali, senza mai sentire il bisogno di svelare la sua vera identità.

Ciò che colpisce in questo lavoro è la veemente predisposizione avant-dub, più di uno sguardo in avanti eleva il disco da tanta melma inglese presente in questo filone, la stessa che, spesso, genera rigetto in chi ha appena deciso di avvicinarsi al fenomeno. Il linguaggio sonoro presente in “Burial” va oltre e decide di aprirsi a tutti. Con il dovuto distacco propone le sue incessanti modulazioni elettroniche, il suo profumo industriale, sollevandosi come una nube tossica nel cielo di Londra.
