THE RULES OF THE GAME

Each participating editor or contributor draws up a list of titles tied to the theme, representative of their own perspective. To encourage overall diversity, we only allow one or two albums per band. The lists are collected and the first twenty albums mentioned are given a score: twenty points to the one listed first, nineteen to the next, and so on. If an album is mentioned by more than one participant, the points it receives from each are added together. Ranking the titles from the one with the most points produces the final chart.
What you're reading is therefore a representation of the convergences and the range of viewpoints among OndaRock's contributors. It's not a list built behind closed doors, there are no corrections or backroom quotas. The only agreed element is the set of rules above.
It's a game, and we hope the outcome intrigues readers as much as it does the participants. For those who want to dig deeper, the individual editors' personal lists can be treasure troves of discoveries. Happy exploring!

Plenty of essentials, but just as many surprises. At the top, names that are iconic for genre devotees: architects Slint and Talk Talk, cult acts like Bark Psychosis, Tortoise and Stereolab, and fan favourites that have by now become cross-generational (Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Mogwai, Sigur Rós). But the list also reveals some less obvious convergences, pointing to styles more eclectic than the established canon: the acoustic sound of Dirty Three and Clogs, the guitar-driven "jungle" of Long Fin Killie, the cutting melancholy of Rodan, acts from outside the Anglosphere such as Indonesia's Efek Rumah Kaca, and the post-metal of Isis.

The artists' leaderboard seemed headed for a replay of the magazine staff's favorite-albums ranking, but - as if wanting to mirror the sonic rifts that would surprisingly burst out of their perfect silences - Talk Talk leap to the top on the strength of two masterpieces, "Spirit of Eden" and "Laughing Stock".
The band of the late Mark Hollis once again proves why their slo-core beat every champion of post-rock to the punch.
